Hahaha. Yeah, I dunno...on one hand, I don't like comedians stealing other comedians' bits. But on the other hand, Bill Hicks's stuff should be repeated ad nauseum until society gets the friggin point.

Still my favorite comedian of all time.

Don't you have to be, you know, FUNNY to be a comedian?

I've never laughed at a single Bill Hicks routine.

Some people live in lies and laugh at the truth. You probably live in truth and hate being reminded of it.

Me either, but I do think he had some interesting ideas.  He pointed out a lot of things that were absurd but so integral to our thinking that we could never see how ridiculous they are.  His only mistake, I think, was that he was so cynical himself that he couldn't LET other people not be the same way.  It made him unlikeable, and for that reason it's just not fun to watch him.  He was a good comic but a horrible entertainer.

Well, clearly, if someone can't make you laugh, they can't make anyone laugh. Maybe the admin on duty will just shut this thread down. There's really no point in going in further because the guy just wasn't funny. He didn't make BigBaldRon laugh, and that's all there is to it.

I'll bet you thought Basic Instinct was a really good movie.

ive liked Dennis Leary in his movies like The Ref or Two if by Sea, even the first couple seasons of his HBO series...
but find his stand up boring as hell.

from what ive heard of Hicks [what i can find on the YouTubes], i put him slightly better than DL's standup.

I don't think he's funny either,I think he's one of those guys you're supposed to think is funny because he was troubled and he died young. He made obvious jokes about obvious societal problems ,nothing you can't find on any political forum and nothing particularly profound. His delivery was horrible and most of it was preachy in a way only slightly less annoying than Bono.

If you aren't cynical you aren't paying attention.

Don't worry, Dane Cook is still alive.

I've watched Bill Hick documentaries and his stand up but there was something there that I'm just not getting and I've watched/heard a lot of stand up.

Comedians are the only people that are allowed to make fun of the king. His delivery isn't the problem at all. You obviously don't understand humor if you think that's the problem. But you are correct in associating his message with Bono's because apparently you have to be an artist to actually talk about the ills of society. Because if you aren't an artist, then you're just whining.

Lots of comedians make fun of the powerful, are adept at bringing attention to our social ills  and are funny too,Richard Prior was a true master at it,Bill Hicks wasn't.

I didn't see much humour in The Metamorphosis, either, but its author sure thought it was a laugh riot.

Different things are funny to different people. Some people think Bill Hicks is funny, others don't. To me, Hicks is funny, but not in a laugh-out-loud, slapstick, hurricane of puns sort of way. Hicks's brand of humour was much more subtle, and elicits nothing more than a knowing smirk at best. That doesn't make him any more or less funny than, say, a Groucho Marx or a Mitch Hedberg. Just different.

Watched them all and cracked a couple of smiles but didn't exactly "laugh".

His routines have interesting ideas but the execution gets tiring quickly. At least it does for me.

The man took a shiat on everything when he was alive. He was a full-blown nihilist. So in his honor I'll shiat on him and declare that I never once found him funny. There.

Hick's most underrated, or at least forgotten, routine was the western.  "I don't even know what Gingham is...pow!"  Catch phrase (required in the 80's) "Put down the gun"

Why he never refined that is beyond me, but it was brilliant.

We'll never know how Hicks would have been in a series. That said, I loved Leary in Rescue Me and Hicks stand-up is better than Leary. Hence my 'why not both?' post earlier in this thread.

I know what I find funny. Bill Hicks is very funny to me.
Matters not that some find Jerry Seinfield funny.

In that sense, you're right - I know funny.

Hebalo: Comedy Powerhouse? Ummmm, no.

Not a powerhouse in terms of conventional jokes... Just a really intelligent and insightful observationalist that just happened to make some people laugh. Only people on certain wavelengths would understand the humor. If you've never smoke weed, got into philosophy, or have taken LSD or mushrooms, you probably wouldn't 'get' him... There are plenty of other comedians telling mother-in-law jokes...
