If there's one thing that scares the shiat out of any politician, it's the threat of losing money.

And that's a LOT of money.

Well, they won't be moving it to Atlanta, KC or St Louis as Georgia and Missouri have similar laws working their way through the system.

As a recently converted gay football fan (to the football fan part, the gay thing is inherent) I'm really happy that the NFL was willing to consider this.  Good for them.

Honestly, his combine performance seemed to be pretty poor from what I saw. That's a pretty big impediment to any team that might draft him regardless of his being gay.

Yeah, that's true, but they'll still get criticized if he's not drafted. This BS threat gives Brewer "cover" for her veto and gives the NFL some "cover" just in case he doesn't get drafted in May.

Uh, yeah, no...the combine is never a BIG impediment to anything. I mean, sure...it's there, but if there's a bad combine showing, that will only scare off half the teams. Usually the half that are never any good anyway.

And there's a HUGE difference between "doesn't get drafted" and "doesn't get drafted in the first round".

Oh I don't think he was ever a first round guy.  And in some ways it's better to be undrafted than to be a late round pick.  That said, he will be a 4th or 5th rounder at worst; probably higher.

/I wonder if the SB stuff helped convince the gov. what a bad idea it would be to sign a bill that's just gonna get smacked down by the courts in due time (yeah I know there's a thread on this)

Tough part is he's getting more scrutiny that someone normally would for his draft position. He's an early day 3er who could have gotten a late round 2 flyer based on hoping he's not a true tweener and could work in position. The combine might eliminate day 2 hope unless he has a good pro day. Falling out of the draft though (while possible, Jasper Collins was an early 3rd day guy who ended up undrafted last year) would look bad given his stats. It would look really bad given the Ray Rice timing. PTI covered it well the other day.

You know, I was going to wonder what this would mean to his draft stock...

I think looking pretty awful in the Combine will mean a lot more. If anything, the talk about his orientation HELPED his draft stock, because people are talking about that more than how unimpressive he looked this past weekend.

Botched post, late day 2 flyer, not late round 2 flyer. He doesn't have the build for that spot. If I was guessing, he was most likely a round 5, could be 4, will most likely go in the 6th after combine

Not sure? Well, sure...none of us know unless you happened to work for one of the NFL teams in a scouting/drafting position.

I suppose using a QB to illustrate my point about a defensive player might not really back me up. But he was a sixth round pick because of the combine, yet he turned out to be a hall of fame player. 15 years later, I think the NFL has learned that the combine is only a small part of the equation.

Oh, I don't think the NFL is getting any cover. It's pretty clear the media, at least, fully expects him to be taken by someone at some point. If it gets into about Round 6 and Sam's still on the board, that's going to be Topic #1 for the rest of the draft until his name gets called, and if he doesn't get drafted, holy hell run for cover.

I mean... do the teams think this'll go away if they don't draft Sam? Because it isn't. They can have one team distracted, or they can have all 32 teams distracted when each and every local media outlet who was calling for their team to beef up at defensive end individually peppers the front office as to why they left a perfectly good defensive end on the table seven times. And they can hear about it every single day Sam doesn't have a job.

And Sam's not going to be the last openly gay player either. If he doesn't get drafted, sooner or later, probably sooner, another one's going to declare for the draft and we can do this whole dog and pony show over again from the top. And we can do it over and over again and watch the pressure on the league get worse and worse until someone finally cracks and drafts one. And then plays them in a meaningful game, because if they don't actually put them on the field, that's not going to suffice either.

Gosling: Oh, I don't think the NFL is getting any cover.

I think it gets a little. Not much, but a little.
Mostly, though, this is all to make it easier for Brewer to veto this. She knew she was going to veto it probably before it passed the legislature. I'm virtually positive she called Romney and asked him to weigh in. I'm suspicious that maybe her office was in contact with the NFL.

Veto or no veto, the fact that this bill made it as far as it did PLUS the whole immigration thing would make me seriously wonder what stunt they'd try to pull next. Maybe switch now before it's too late?

It's not the Broncos' fault that the divisions they play on the 4 year rotation happened to be the AFC South and NFC East.  Of the 12 teams in the playoffs overall they played 4 of the 5 other teams in the AFC playoffs.  They just played really, really poorly in the Super Bowl.

I wanted the bullet. I want a Super Bowl played in the snow. I want the field to be snowy and icy and muddy and sloppy. And I want the league to try again to GET a snowy, muddy, sloppy field. Chicago. Denver. Philly. Hell, we'll host it in Green Bay.

I don't really care where/who/how they go, it's just sad to be an American and have ass backwards people in certain states (Arizona, and the rest of the South mostly) give the rest of us semi-educated, tolerant, forward thinking folk a bad rep.
