Albeit this is a poorly written article and obviously there is a lot of incompetence involved here...but I am getting a feeling that there has to be more to the story.

Deputy Sheriff Johnny Hawkins got suspended for 10 days without pay and transferred from the investigative unit.

That's more time off than police around here get for a dead prisoner.

This story was hilarious

Now he's free to have zany buddy cop adventures with his new veteran partner, who is only a week from retirement.

What kind of representation did this guy have if this wasn't item one at his arraignment?

Laquanda Sharkeesha Jackson-Williams approves. As do Shlomo Yosef Markowitz, Kaydynn Alleksyiss Ryin Darlington, Mbala Kofi Mbala, and Roll Fizzlebeef.

// I also have an odd-ish name
// good to know it's unlikely I'll serve someone else's jail time
// though I did serve a bunch of someone else's detentions in HS (apparently, I looked like this other kid, and since I got lots of detention notices anyway...)

Never underestimate the power of incompetence.

Two white boys with the same name going to the same school.

I wonder how many times they ignored him saying "You've got the wrong guy!"

Did we catch the terrorist, Buttle?

Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight.

2014-02-26 03:27:50 PM
I mean, how in the world did this not come up sooner?  How do you arrest based off a name, without having someone take a look at a picture and ask if that is the guy?

2014-02-26 03:30:50 PM
I'm no expert but when they arrest you isn't there some sort of attempt to figure out what your identity is? I assume they check your social security number, or birth certificate or passport to make sure that the paperwork is all squared away. At the risk of stating the obvious, this is why we have government ID because people can have the same names. There may be more to the story than we know yet...

2014-02-26 03:30:51 PM
In high school, we had a GUY named Kim Malcheski.  If you Google that name, you'll find he's a successful attorney in San Francisco, who did not attend my HS.  Two different men sharing a woman's Polish name. NTTAWWT

Stellar police there. I'm going to call the police, tell them my name is Barak Obama and I need a motorcade escort to the Foxy Lady.

FTFA: Hawkins apologized for the error yesterday, saying "arresting an innocent person is something we fear far more than letting a guilty person get away."

That's premium Police BS right there. If that is so, why didn't you even check his full name when you arrested him.

CHERON: What kind of representation did this guy have if this wasn't item one at his arraignment?

He had the standard Public Defender attorney. They introduce themselves to you in a holding cell, and that is the last you see of them until hearing or the trial.

Per howmanyofme.com, I am the only person in the US with my name. Since I have a very uncommon last name, I'm pretty sure that's correct.

The sheriff's career is shot he also killed the deputies.

Based only on the word of a child, this dude was arrested and spent over a month in jail. Yikes.

I wonder how they initially found him to arrest him? Were his parents the only ones with a listed phone number, on the voter registration list, or who owned property? Did the school not ask "which one?" when they called?

I had a client once named Peter Rabbit Ambo

He came to me for a legal name change

Neat; I never heard of that site.

Apparently, there are fewer than 1,500 people that share my (uncommon) first name, while there are over 50,000 with my (fairly common) last name.

// and like you, I am the only known American with that combination of names

Good thing she didn't report that a John Smith had assaulted her. Florida would have had to build more jails to handle that one.

Wait a minute, I can accuse someone of committing a crime and with no evidence the police can arrest them?

I hope this was just a poorly written article and that there was some sort of corroborating evidence.

Arresting officer should have to spend 35 days in jail as punishment.

30,000 people in the US share my name.

2014-02-26 04:04:10 PM
True story, I had a cop (an obviously drunk one at a bar from the sound of it) who asked for me by name call me up once and threaten to kick my ass and have his cop buddies harass me over some drama about a woman I'd never met.

He got increasingly pissed when I kept insisting that I had no clue who or what he was talking about.

So I asked him if he had my full name. He told me.

Of course the middle name was wrong.

I gave him MY middle name and suggested that he check his facts better. He got real apologetic at that point and asked me if I knew the other guy with "my name". I guess he thought I would help him kick that guy's ass. I didn't.

Then he kept insisting that he buy me a beer to make up for it. I didn't take him up on the offer.

/in hindsight I wish I had gotten his name and department
//not that it would do any good
///probably would have just caused me more trouble
////cops suck

Yah, but SHE has to date Marc Maron, so there's that.

He's highly amusing, but I wouldn't want to live with the guy.
Think Woody Allen, but less secure in himself.

I am friends with everyone I can find on Facebook that shares my same first and last name.

And that website told me I'm the only one with my same first and last name.

So they arrested this guy, didn't bring in a witness (the young girl) to confirm that this was the correct guy in a lineup?  Just locked him up because of his name?  I wonder how many other people are presently locked up because of this idiot Sheriff?

m00: 30,000 people in the US share my name.

93 people in the US with my name if you combine the full version of my first name with the short version, but I'm not any of them.

One of them is a former Army Ranger, and one's a Microsoft programmer who wrote a book (called Writing Solid Code, which is hysterical coming from Microsoft).

There's also a bloke in the UK who plays snooker.

Hopefully someday I'm the person they find when they vanity Google themselves.

In the past I've looked up my name just to see what shows up, usually there's an actor and director.  This time I was actually mentioned because of some photos I took.

If they both got the same haircut and one didn't have a pissed off look on his face those guys could almost be twins.  same face shape, mouth etc. just very slightly different.

The innocent guy might want to have his name changed or something (at the police departments cost)

What, again?

Not really since the jailors will treat him with kid gloves. Better idea, have him give up a week's pay for every day that this kid spent wrongly locked up and give that money to the kid.

As someone with an almost "John Smith" common name that is always a scary possibility.
