Don't give the Republicans any ideas, Dubai!

Well, they do similar things here, they just aren't so overt about it.  For instance, in NYC, they don't explicitly  say you have to be worth X amount to own a car, but parking/garaging your car is so outrageously expensive that they might as well.

How about we just ban the poor from having children they can't afford to raise?

Cash for Clunkers was a start. Destroy all the used cars. Create a shortage of used parts so the poors can't afford to fix their old junkers!

Republicans?

Have you been to San Francisco?

factoryconnection: I think Japan has some similar-spirit policies.  According to the folks I talked to when I was there with the Navy, your car gets more expensive to register with age, and you have to have proof of off-street parking in order to purchase a car in the first place.  That's gotta price out a lot of people.

However, their public transport system is top-notch and timely as a motherf*cker.

I did a quick search out of curiosity.  Looks like the average delay for a train is...  20-40 seconds?  Timely as a motherf*cker indeed.

This idea is so assholish, I'm kinda surprised the Republicans didn't come up with it first and introduce it as proposed legislation in a dozen states.

yet every time I hear somebody talking about a plan that would make car ownership/use more expensive, it's coming from the other side of the aisle.

Remember that cash-for-clunkers program the effectively destroyed a large portion of used auto parts that would have enabled a person to keep a car cheaply on the road for many years to come?

The_Sponge: BTW, does anyone have any travel tips regarding Dubai?  I will be there in May.

Don't drink, don't swear, don't insult the government, and don't kiss in public.

In some cities in china, there isn't a salary wall, but you do have to buy licences for your car (no, not a drivers licence, an ownership licence for the vehicle), and they are given out kinda like NYC taxi medallions, so they can reach five-figures.

That's a great idea, Georgia!  Poor folk have crappy cars anyway.  While we're at it, If we could increase the price of fuel to 5 dollars a gallon (but cut it for professional transporters so domestic goods (ie. Christal, Cigars, Truffles)  would be cheaper) I'd be happier than a tornado in a trailer park.

I don't believe this deserves the "asinine" tag . . .  the idea does make some sense.  If the roads are congested because too many people can afford private cars, then increase the cost of car ownership.  At the same time, make public transportation more efficient and affordable (which the article suggests Dubai is doing).

You gotta do it like states like MA do with car inspections that make it so a beater can't be legally driven on the road so you effectively make it so poor people can't own cars without actually coming out and saying it.

In related news, the GOP are rumored to be putting together some legislation they promise will help curb pollution and traffic congestion.

Yep, you guessed it.

More tax cuts for the rich and an attempt to repeal Obamacare.
