Kind of like all the people that get food stamps and free school lunches for their 4 kids but have smart phones, internet and cable TV.

No. It's not the same.

Because their income may just barely cover these items and honestly, it's necessary for families these days to be able to communicate with the outside world and have a way to entertain their families and kids.

I know some families who never go to movies or museums because they can't afford it, even on free admission days because gas might be too much. But they do a lot of watching PBS, Discovery Channel, and have movie nights on weekends which they otherwise couldn't afford. I also know some families where a parent or grandparent may be paying for cell phone service or cable for the kids. Just like I know some aunties and uncles who chip in for that nice pair of shoes or coat you see a kid wearing.

I despise people like you who expect poor people to walk around wearing sackcloth and ashes, heads and eyes down and dress and act with the humility you think they should be punished with for the crime of being poor. But for all the outward trappings you think they shouldn't have, there are many other ways they go without that having a cell phone wouldn't make one bit of difference about.

Don't be so damned judgmental about poverty.

You know, here's the thing. Dismiss this all you want, but understand that conservatives are genuinely, truly offended by people on government assistance who possess anything that could be considered a conspicuous luxury. I wish there were some way to disabuse them of this notion - in a way that they can comprehend.I've never seen such an explanation. Does anyone have one?

In life sometimes people fall. The further they fall the more help they need getting back up however it is not necessary for them to hit rock bottom before we deign to offer them assistance. In fact it's preferable that we catch them before they hit rock bottom as it will cost less to get them back on their feet. The more tools they have at their disposal the greater their chances of success and the sooner they get back to being productive members of society.

Roen said it was important for his audience to see.

See what? Poor people receiving donations from charitable organizations? Oh the horror! What's that? The boxes of food contain more than just rice and beans? Oh noes! Some of the people who are there for food have cars? Decent clothes? Cell phones? Such luxury! How can they claim to be poor when they have it so good!

You know, they probably had a house and a job at one point before shiat happened and they lost those things but they held onto what they could and now they need some help getting back on their feet. Taking food that could have gone to someone truly in need is nothing to brag about.

Beautiful.  Couldn't have said it more simply or sensibly than that.  The idea that no one deserves help until they're good and ashamed of their situation is disgusting.  And no one is willing to consider things like help from outside sources or family and friends because they can't even imagine for a second doing something like that themselves without getting endless accolades and adoring fans for doing so.

Very nice, but way too wordy and way too much nuance to convince the conservative mind. You need to cut it down to soundbite length.

Prepaid cell phones are actually cheaper than land lines out here.  My dad got a smartphone for a one-time $25 for the phone, plus $25 every three months for a new prepaid card (as the minutes eventually expire).  He ends up paying under $8.50 per month for his cell phone.

A landline out here is a minimum of $20 a month.  Costs of landlines have actually gone up a lot recently (which is why my dad switched).  Landline prices are going to continue to rise as fewer and fewer subscribers need to pay for the maintenance of the same number of miles of lines.

My brother and sister-in-law are selfish bastards who always put themselves before their two children.  They don't have a lot of money, but if they want something, they buy it.  But if my nephews need clothes, food or transportation anywhere, then it's up to my parents or us to provide it for them, because they will go without if we don't.  Without the free lunch program, they wouldn't eat most days...not because their parents can't afford it, but because they just honestly don't care about their children.  I don't get why anyone would biatch about a kid getting a free meal at school...even if their parents are low-lifes, it's not the kid's fault, so why punish the wrong person?

Last I knew, most food banks don't ask for W-2's.  They take you at your word, because for them, it is better that everyone that does need food to gets it when they come in, rather than have someone go hungry because the food banks are afraid of someone scamming the system.
