Hermione_Granger: abhorrent1: fusillade762: Wow. That's some weapons grade asshattery.

Kind of like all the people that get food stamps and free school lunches for their 4 kids but have smart phones, internet and cable TV.

No. It's not the same.

Because their income may just barely cover these items and honestly, it's necessary for families these days to be able to communicate with the outside world and have a way to entertain their families and kids.

I know some families who never go to movies or museums because they can't afford it, even on free admission days because gas might be too much. But they do a lot of watching PBS, Discovery Channel, and have movie nights on weekends which they otherwise couldn't afford. I also know some families where a parent or grandparent may be paying for cell phone service or cable for the kids. Just like I know some aunties and uncles who chip in for that nice pair of shoes or coat you see a kid wearing.

I despise people like you who expect poor people to walk around wearing sackcloth and ashes, heads and eyes down and dress and act with the humility you think they should be punished with for the crime of being poor. But for all the outward trappings you think they shouldn't have, there are many other ways they go without that having a cell phone wouldn't make one bit of difference about.

Don't be so damned judgmental about poverty.

Those are the middle class "poor" who would turn their noses at such lowly accommodations of a food banks while driving their SUVs back to their triple-mortgaged mcmansions. People who actually scrape by and manage on a thin paycheck are much more deserving.

You know, here's the thing. Dismiss this all you want, but understand that conservatives are genuinely, truly offended by people on government assistance who possess anything that could be considered a conspicuous luxury. I wish there were some way to disabuse them of this notion - in a way that they can comprehend.I've never seen such an explanation. Does anyone have one?

In life sometimes people fall. The further they fall the more help they need getting back up however it is not necessary for them to hit rock bottom before we deign to offer them assistance. In fact it's preferable that we catch them before they hit rock bottom as it will cost less to get them back on their feet. The more tools they have at their disposal the greater their chances of success and the sooner they get back to being productive members of society.

Nobody needs 4 kids, first of all.  Most of the world can live without a smart phone, get the cheap dumb one.  There is free TV, get that.  Everyone needs internet though.  No matter how many kids a moron has it's not their fault, feed them well, especially at school, and maybe they will get out of the moronic rut they were born in.  Pay people to sterilize themselves.

Nah. They're too busy eating the junk food and drinking the booze I paid for while playing the $60 game they bought on their xbox live account. They only stop long enough to get on their HSI and post how wrong I am and how they really sacrifice. Or maybe they post it from their unlimited data iPhone 5 because they don't feel like getting off the couch to go to the computer and do it.

Beautiful.  Couldn't have said it more simply or sensibly than that.  The idea that no one deserves help until they're good and ashamed of their situation is disgusting.  And no one is willing to consider things like help from outside sources or family and friends because they can't even imagine for a second doing something like that themselves without getting endless accolades and adoring fans for doing so.

A pothead who calls himself "Bong Rip" and champions legalization is about as Republican as Alec Baldwin. Yeah, yeah, all conservatives hate poor people (let's pretend laws that subtly criminalize homelessness aren't being pushed by members of both parties, especially in the coastal states), but you're complaining in the wrong thread.

Simple enough. Explain how they are useful in getting/keeping a job or how the item helps them live cheaply. IE: when you buy food and keep at home having a nice cold place to store it will help you buy in bulk and save. IE: it's hard to get a job if people can't get a hold of you, if they have a phone on them they are more likely to get the call. And if they start biatching about them having an iPhone tell them you can get an IPhone 4 for a dollar. And a smart phone is a cheap and convenient way to email out resumes!

Most of the time when you run into this augment you're dealing with an older person that isn't up on their tech.
Now I must admit if you can't find a job getting purpose for the items you're buying with money from government assistance I have a problem with you spending the money on it. Mind you I know you need food, shelter and clothes to make a job happen.

I need to throw this caveat in: all the above is for single people and married couples without kids. I understand and believe more creature comforts need to be supplied to homes with kids present.

Don't be so damned judgmental about poverty.

My brother and sister-in-law are selfish bastards who always put themselves before their two children.  They don't have a lot of money, but if they want something, they buy it.  But if my nephews need clothes, food or transportation anywhere, then it's up to my parents or us to provide it for them, because they will go without if we don't.  Without the free lunch program, they wouldn't eat most days...not because their parents can't afford it, but because they just honestly don't care about their children.  I don't get why anyone would biatch about a kid getting a free meal at school...even if their parents are low-lifes, it's not the kid's fault, so why punish the wrong person?

Very good point.
