What's funny is this idea that the first "openly" or admitted gay NFL player is assumed to be the only gay NFL player.  Evah!  Oh puhleeze louise.

I don't get it.

A Delorean would be good.   Clean hands in the "moral" arena would help also.

I too have to laugh/facepalm at the number of people opposed to Sam who cannot see/admit that first "openly" gay player doesn't mean first gay player.

All the doomsaying predictions of what's going to happen to society if gays get into pro football is proved wrong by the fact that they've already been IN it without advertizing it for years.  SPecial mention to those idiots who try to make the "I don't want to shower with gay people" argument, because statistically, if you've showered communally more than a few times, it's already happened.

Oh, who am I preaching to anyway? Most SANE people realize that.

I just found it funny that while Reggie White was getting in trouble for his anti-gay views, the guy who played next to him (Esera Tualou) was gay.

And plays a mean ukelele.

As openly gay as was possible in the late 60's early 70's (c'mon just LOOK at that 'stache) everybody was okay with that-even Vince Lombardi (partly because so was Lombardi's brother)

i have a great clip of Artie Lange on adam carolla show, right around the time the liberace movie came out, and artie lange mentioned the story of how liberace claimed he lost his manginity to a Green Bay Packer.  So he starts rifffing in the voice of Lombardi and the best part is, the soundman adds the music bed of classic NFL Films music:

"what the hell's goin' on out there?  Everyone's suckin' cock!  We're tryign to run the counter trey and you're blowing Liberace!  Everybody is suckin cock and farking ass out there!  I'm trying to coach football and you're eating someone's ass!  Look at you! You're farking Liberace!  What's wrong with you!"

This is kind of why I was curious as to why Sam even merited it a tweet. He's gonna be a very busy guy if he feels he has to put out every little fire.

He's got plenty of time on his hands, especially if it's while he's running a 40.

That's the trouble with being the first person to go, you have to deal with a lot of crap because you're typically on your own.  I think by giving responses like this early on he's cutting the legs out from future nonsense by making them look like the fools they are.

I was curious why he showed at Columbine with a lot of rainbow paraphernalia, then later asked "when is everyone gonna stop referring to me as Michael Sam the gay football player and start referring to me as Michael Sam of the NFL?"

I mean, if this is what he wants why show up with all the rainbow stuff which only serves to remind folks of his orientation?

Magorn: Redskins star tight end Jerry Smith

The NFL Films documentary on Jerry Smith was excellent. Apart from being smokin' hot in his pre-porn 'stache days, he was a fantastic receiver. He was listed as a tight end but he was more of a slot receiver type and he did it in a time where there was no going in motion plays for receivers. He reminded me a lot of Ed McCaffrey, same build and great hands.

I knew how Smith's story ended, but I held it together until his brother burst in to tears on camera, at which point I did too.

It's a decision between "I want to show that my ideaology does not differentiate me from any other people in my field of work and I deserve no special treatment" or "oh hey look at me I'm oppressed and anyone who oppresses me should be made to look very very stupid and you can't judge me because I'm different than you how dare you not pay attention to me PAY ATTENTION TO ME DAMMIT". Sam's doing his best to stick to the former for now.

Seems like more of a PR move on both parts. Clever retorts are gold in the social media age and if someone is lobbing you softballs, you should crush 1 or 2 of them. Mash some taters.

So. . . . no headline about how much Sam sucked in the combine yet?

Are people still going to be outraged when he drops to the lower rounds or goes undrafted because Wide Recievers are benching more than he is and Linemen are outrunning him?

Henry Holland: I knew how Smith's story ended, but I held it together until his brother burst in to tears on camera, at which point I did too.

i never saw that one, but did you ever see the...hmmm......whether NFL Films or ESPN mini-doc, but the one about the TE coached by a very young Bill Parcells, circa late 70s/early 80s?  I don't remember a ton about the story (this was a couple years ago) but Parcells took a shine to this kid, the classic "overacheived at the NFL level, outworked his talent" story.  He finds a lump on his back, goes in to get it checked, it is some crazy untreatable cancer that they couldn't do much with at the time, he ends up dying.

in the documentary, a more or less contemporary Bill Parcells got way choked up just talking about the guy.  and that got me a little bit.  Parcells was talking about a player that died probably 20-25 years ago and just the thought of him moved him to tears.  powerful stuff.

No. Fark is very pro gay. If something makes a gay sports figure look slightly bad you wont see it here. This dude would have to do something really bad before he could get a negative headline on FARK. Simply performing poorly as an athlete while getting the star treatment from media wont be enough. He is not like Tim Tebow or Danica Patrick that way.
