(Yahoo)   Woman who wants to live off the grid is upset when the city caps her sewer, which is on the grid. It turns out she's ok with living on part of the grid but doesn't want to pay for the grid. Or something. Florida   (news.yahoo.com) divider line 52

I thought pure evil was what came out when you pooped and that's what the sewers got rid of.

FTA: Also discussed at the special hearing was the fact that Speronis had been using the sewer system for the past year yet not paying for the service amassing a past due bill in the thousands. After her testimony admitting that she had used the service without paying for it, the city decided to cap the sewer line. Connie Barron, Cape Coral spokesperson told The News-Press, "She also gave clear indications she does not intend to pay for this service but intends to continue to use the system. We really had no choice but to cap the sewer."

Speronis' time living on the grid hasn't gone so well for her either. As reported by the Cape Coral Daily Breeze , in June 2011, she plead no content to larceny, and was sentenced to 10 years of state probation and ordered to pay $32,000 in restitution. In January 2012, she had her real estate license revoked following a second complaint that she had not returned a $3,500 deposit following a failed condo sale.

Yeah, that's a delicate snowflake being railroaded by evil gobberment minions.

I'm seeing how she has a defense.  She used the sewer and didn't pay for it.

Torn about which part? The part where the woman used the sewer despite not paying her sewer bill? The part where the woman admitted that she was doing that? Or the part where the woman admitted that she planned to continue to use the sewer, but had no intention of ever paying her sewer bill?

My monthly water bill is about $45. Of that, less than $2 is for actual water usage, the rest is for sewer, trash pick up, storm water processing and various other taxes and fees.

So this lady thinks she should be able to use services and not pay for them. She's a farking idiot.

Crass and Jaded Mother Farker: Crappy, yes...

Not even crappy. It's simply the process the city has to take to get the crazy flushed out of the system. Cap the septic, condemn the property, evict the tenant.

If she wants to live off the grid, she needs to get off the grid. Choosing to do so in the midst of an area with zoning specifically opposing living of the grid just doesn't work. And choosing to live off the grid and refusing to pay for services rendered are not the same.

I recently moved to Cape Coral. Absolutely everything here is fake. Man made canals, imported trees and shrubs, planted grass...  hell, even the sand is dug up elsewhere before it is dumped here.

This place ain't the woods. It's a planned community, designed in a grid pattern (Heh).

Anyway, a minimally used sewer line around here has a tendency to rust shut, causing serious backflow issues. Also creates a breeding ground for cockroaches, or whatever the colorful local slang for that pest is.

I love it here, but Florida is definitely 'America's Sewer Drain'.

Yeah, exactly. Cape Coral is an upper middle class beachfront city, hardly a Florida backwater where one would be able to hunt, forage, and farm.

I agree the woman seems to be a bit of a crackpot, however with solar panel prices dropping and "green living" becoming more popular this is an issue that cities and utility providers are going to have to cope with.

I suspect the underlying problem here is the sanitary sewer surcharge. Most municipalities have moved it from the property tax bill to the water bill because the amount of sewage leaving a household is generally a reflection of the amount of water consumed by the household. She could install a septic bed, assuming her property is large enough to accommodate one, and if local by-laws permit them (generally in urban areas existing septic systems have been grandfathered and new ones prohibited). If she has no other choice but to have access to the sewer the city needs to come up with an equitable solution to bill her for use of the service. Since she appears to be living in the household alone they could estimate the sanitary surcharge based on a single occupancy household and add it to her tax bill.

Forcing her to have a water connection is unreasonable if she will receive no benefit from it. Likewise hydro, and natural gas. All these services can be restored when she sells the home (smart buyers will make it a condition of sale).

There are three things that are certain in this world: Death. Taxes. Hypocrisy of Teahadists.

Consider what happened in Texas recently.   Texas utility companies were trying to install "smart" electric meters to better manage power consumption.  The usual suspects came out with their AK-47s and cased off the utility workers because they didn't want, "No "Bama spy meter on my house!".   Funny thing is, Texas has an independent electric grid that's not connected to the rest of the country, and doesn't get subsidies from Washington.

Well, a few months later, a storm blew through large parts of Texas that pulled down power lines and the electric service heads on people's homes.   The service head in not the responsibility of the power company, it is the responsibility of the property owner.  The same people who didn't want no Obama meters were waving around their AK-47s saying, "Somebody better connect my 'lektic rite now or there is gonna be trouble!"

When this story first hit, I assumed she was on septic, like many areas of Cape Coral are.   Hearing she's on city sewer, I have NO sympathy for her whatsoever, not that I had much to begin with.

So you're saying the city has done no wrong?  That the eviction notice (presumably in response to her going to the media) was on the up and up?  That the city found her guilty of not having an "approved water supply" (which has nothing to do with sewers, and it doesn't make sense that the city can mandate a "water supply" in the first place... there's nothing wrong with not having running water in your house).  You're ok with all that?

Cape Coral isn't upper middle class. (Parts of Ft. Myers are upper middle.) Cape Coral is just a sprawl of tract houses and strip malls. What is distinctive about it is its stitchwork map of canals that look like something out of 1982 computer art.

On another note.. I didn't say I lived off the grid.  Though I am contemplating ways to reduce it.  There are camping solar equipment that can reduce power company reliance for example. Instead of doing a huge construction job on the house.  A generator that can have a solar panel plugged into it and charge off the sun within 48 hours, or just plug it into a socket for 8 for example.
