Just to add a little info from another article.

Akiki isn't a member of the Latin Catholic church, the one Americans are typically familiar with. He belongs to the Maronite Church -- one of the other 22 types of Catholic churches that still fall under the Holy See in Rome -- where many priests have put a ring on it.

"It's hard for Americans to understand," says Deacon Louis Peters. "Half the priests in Lebanon are married. Pope Francis gave permission for this particular case because it is part of our tradition."

I had a very devout catholic professor I was friends with in school.  He used to say that priests have been able to marry for most of the history of the church and they'll be allowed to again.  I bet it will happen in our lifetime.

Priests' celibacy is rooted in the middle ages and earlier, when the church held a great deal of property, and it was under the aegis of the local parish priest.  If they married, they could then bequeath that property to their progeny.  The flocks didn't care for that after the introduction of commerce and marketing and enlightened thinking.

It's an antiquated rule for Catholic priests.  Should be done away with.

I think this is perfectly fine.  I never understood the whole vow of celibacy anyway, I guess it means you love teh God more than worldly impulses or something.

As a parent, I would trust a married priest more than a so called celibate one, although it's been a while since my shadow graced a church house door.

This.  It is not uncommon men to be ordained in some branches of the Catholic Church.  I know a nice Romanian priest, (catholic, not Orthodox) who has a wife and two daughters.  If I remember right, the rules go something like this.  Priests who are already ordained cant get married (you have to be married first) and married men are barred from being bishops.

Yeah, the St. Louis Cardinals are more interested on Pujols.

The official position of the diocese is that if the Pujols stay quiet and do what they're told by the cardinals for a decade or so, they can eventually become angels.

We had a married priest for a while.  He converted to Catholicism from one of near-pagan Protestant cults*.

Count me as one of those Catholics who isn't as ferverous as the Church would like based off the no-marriage rule.  My childhood family had some turmoil years ago (brother was a huge disruptive druggie/alcoholic) and the advice given by a series of unmarried-and-kidless dudes made no sense.  And now that I'm older, how can they possibly help if my family ever hits a snag?

*I'm kidding--he was a regular ol' Lutheran.

abhorrent1: Kit Fister: and what's wrong with having priests get married?

Because the bible Vatican realized that 'Family' churches had land holdings and were making a comfortable living, as well as providing inheritance for their offspring. So they decided to make priests celibate to eliminate the offspring and acquire the lands and their incomes.

Marriage was ok in the catholic church until the Pope Benedict banned it in 1022. I personally believe this should be reversed, as in my opinion it has created a "haven" for pedophiles and molesters.

Kit Fister: and what's wrong with having priests get married?

Nothing whatsoever that any sort of logic would dictate.
I cannot imagine what the heck was going through the minds of the people that made up that rule.

"I know!  Priest are NOT allowed to marry!!!  And they must remain celibate!!  We need this sort of self-denial in the people that are leading the church.  It proves their resolve."
"But might that not cause some problems?"

We all know what happened next.
In entirely too many cases, the Catholic priests resolve seems to not be so strong.  Rather than take a chance of being seen with a woman, and obviously breaking his vows, he lures altar boys in.

This is one of the most destructive and harmful practices ever dictated by the church.  But they won't change it.  Even though it's only been the rule for the past couple of hundred years or so - they think it's the way it needs to be.
I wonder what it would take for them to finally wise up and change it.

Technically, if I were religious, I'd rather get religious console from someone whom fights against personal worldly pleasures on a daily basis and manages to accomplish that through God.  I would imagine that they would know better how to quell and control irrationality in life (by objectively blanketing everything in more irrationality) to better be able to help the person being consoled.

Raising a family takes, and should take, a lot of time and effort.  Time and effort that married pastors and priests shouldn't be devoting themselves to as that ultimately takes away from time and devotion to God and to their congregation resulting in a sort of watered down less "intellectual" (comparatively speaking) religion.

Asking chastity from the average person is asking a lot, and instating such a decree ultimately limits the pool of those able and willing to take up such a position, which in turn makes it difficult to amass more followers while maintaining the "integrity" of the institution.  There also seems to be a psychological factor for those that take up such a chastity challenge, that factor being a sexual one which seems to draw a higher percentage of people with a tendency towards pedophilia.

So, in conclusion Catholicism is farked.

While I agree with the overall thrust of your post, I think you may be incorrect on causality. (Unless the only thing preventing you from raping every little boy you see is regular BJs from consenting adult females, but I doubt it.)

There are too many different cases to specify exactly.  But it should be noted that there are a number of priests that joined up and took those vows to prevent themselves from acting on their homosexual desires.  Don't get me wrong.  Homosexuality and pedophelia are two completely different things.  But when young boys are at the available, they make due.
