(TechEBlog)   Swiss watch found in ancient Chinese tomb. Could have just dropped off the wrist of an absent-minded archeologist, but more likely to be proof that time travel exists. With pics of watch so you can be the judge   (techeblog.com) divider line 160

HotWingConspiracy: Time travelers have very tiny wrists.

I think in the future, we all consent to being shrunk to 20% of our size to stretch our resources.

Or there are giants digging up old Chinese tombs.

Time is always leaving its crap all over the place. If you find an iPhone in an ancient Egyptian tomb, Time thinks he might have dropped it there the last time he was there.

that watch has a winding crown, which wasn't invented until the 1840s. also, a movement that small would have to be likely even later than that.

I'll have to make sure to go back in time to remind my past self not to drop that watch when I traveled back to participate in a Ming Dynasty burial.

But if I go back in time to remind myself not to drop the watch and change history by not dropping it, there will be no reason to go back in time to remind myself not to drop the watch, so I will have dropped the watch after all, so I'll have to go back in time to remind myself not to drop the watch...

Uh, time travel DOES exist. We've known about it for a long time. The only thing is, you can't go BACK in time, only forwards. And you'll need a really fast car.

Just Xiang Shaolong's watch.

2014-02-26 10:57:55 AM
Not sure what the big deal is.  I've been time-traveling for years now.

Granted, I only go forward, and at the rate of one second per second, but still.

Copperbelly watersnake: From the article, they found it at the entrance. A good possibility is that an archeologist found the entrance, and left to get more funding or equipment for a full excavation but never managed to get back.

The linked article said it was in the actual coffin, and wrapped in the shroud:

FTFA:
When the coffin was finally opened, and the cloth removed, something metallic hit the ground. The excavation team discovered a mud and rock encrusted ring watch...

Hmmm Pick one:

1) time travel!!!!!
2) the tomb had indeed ben opened  in the recent past
3) the coffin is a fake
4) the story is fake

What they aren't mentioning is the most important detail of all. The hands of the watch say 10:06, which was the time the tomb was opened.

maxx2112: give me doughnuts: rnatalie: There was a story (Larry Niven?) where a former civilization left one of their digital watches that was found in an archeological dig.

Doesn't sound like a Niven story.

It does remind me of some stuff in "Strata", though:

Workboots left in a coal seam...
Dinosaur skeleton with a sign that said "End nuclear testing!"...

The artifact was dismissed as a watch left behind by a Russian team.

Michael Crichton used this as a plot device in "Timeline". Oh, wait...that was glasses. Still a good story.

texdent: Wasn't this the start of a Paul Walker movie?

I read and really liked the Chrichton book of the same name so you can imagine my disappointment when the movie came out.

I still liked it regardless because of the subject matter and kind of appreciate it in a special way for it's Walker-esque cheesiness.

Book was obviously much better.

Tienanmen Square what now?  You mean the glorious defense of the nation from armed-gangs of anarchists?
