Ah, I don't care what the weather forecast is. It's a beautiful day for baseball.

I usually look forward to the NCAA tournament as the sports world's harbinger of spring.  This year, it seems winter will go right on past its conclusion, leading us directly into the desolation that is the first half of the major league baseball season.  This is truly the winter of my discontent.

Let's be Royal Kansas City!

Why the Florida tag? Spiffy would have better.

For lo, the winter is past, the rain is over and gone; the flowers appear on the earth; the time of the singing of birds is come, and the voice of the turtle is heard in our land.

Heh. To me, the masters means spring is here. Baseball is more about summer to me

I feel bad for Jays fans. Your GM is giving Ruben Amaro a run for his money as the worst GM in baseball.

I think he got some cred for escaping the ricciardi contracts and piecing together one of the best bull pens last year.

Everything else? Dumpster fire extinguished by raw sewage.

Still his moves could get us to the playoffs this year...but we still lack a legitimate catcher, 2b, and 5th starter going into this year...and that's being generous

I literally cannot picture it ever being warm enough to play baseball at Fenway again. Highlights from last season look like they were filmed on another planet, with the green grass and the people in short sleeves appearing to enjoy life.

I haven't been an O's 'fan' since 97 or so. But maybe this year I won't get so angry when I hear reports about them on the radio.

Was considering acquiring some unfortunate illness and spending a long weekend watching the Rockies but don't want to support the Arizona economy if segregation law passes.  But, Talking Stick is on the injun reservation, so it's all good, right?

It's cold up here in Twins territory.  And they're going to be awful this year.

Damn, that's a scary looking dog. I wouldn't be surpised if opponents forfeited at the mere sight of it.

Well, I'm excited. The AL West is going to be a madhouse this year, what with the Los Angeles Angels of Disneyland remembering to pick up pitchers not named Joe Blanton. Texas feels to me like they treaded water, but they were pretty good and will be good again. Houston stands to improve significantly. Seattle will be funny to watch as Jack Z implodes and trades Taijuan Walker for Carlos Pena and the death mask of Mark Reynolds. It'll be a close race to see who finishes second to Oakland.

Moreno doesn't know what he's doing with the Angels.  Angel Stadium's a pitchers park, why the hell did you offer Puljols then Hamilton huge money?

And best of all, Eric Sogard is close to winning the "Face of Major League Baseball" Twitter contest. Seriously!

I'm not saying I like those deals, but even teams in traditional pitcher-friendly stadiums need offense. With the bizarre stories I've heard about how the Angels do contract negotiations (offering Matt Garza a contract while he was on vacation and then pulling it after two days or whatever), though, yeah, I'm not sure Arte Moreno has a very good handle on this baseball thing.

He's currently beating Joey Bats by a 2-1 margin. Bow before your goofball overlords, MLB.

Baseball Prospectus came out today with their annual rankings of MLB farm systems.  In addition to last year's mess at the MLB level, they're ranked dead last in terms of minor league talent.  They don't have a single prospect ranked in the top 100.

Here's the summary of their most exciting minor-leaguer: "The Year Ahead: Taylor Lindsey is the top prospect in the Angels system, but I doubt he would sit atop the list for any other team in baseball. He has a really nice hit tool, and if you are one of those people who really, really believes in it-meaning you think he can develop into a .285+ hitter at the major-league level-perhaps you can look beyond his other "average-at-best" attributes to see a first-division talent. I like the player and I think he will hit for a good average with some doubles power, but I don't see a lot of over-the-fence power coming and the overall profile is a bit one dimensional."

So that's what they have to look forward to.  Maybe a middle infielder who can sort of play defense and rap out some singles and doubles.  Their #2 prospect is a 3B who flamed out and hit .221/.279/.301 in AA ball last year.  Their #3 is a plodding 1B/DH type who is blocked by a guy that they're paying this much money to in the future:

2014:$23M, 2015:$24M, 2016:$25M, 2017:$26M, 2018:$27M, 2019:$28M, 2020:$29M, 2021:$30M

That's not a typo, by the way: They'll be paying Albert Pujols $30M in the year 2021, when he's (allegedly) 41 years old.

Nicely done, Moreno.
