This has been done for centuries with dogs, horses, donkeys. If you can get the animal to a turn a gear for you have the means to apply pressure.

I think this machine would have been more impressive with a big fat person walking on the treadmill instead of the horse.  Seems like there is not much resistance on the treadmill part sooooo...  Burn some fat AND split some logs.
