It's a reference to the end of the movie Pee Wee's Big Adventure where Pee Wee runs into a burning pet store and helps all the animals to get out, and he is eaked out by snakes so he saves them last and passes out with them in his arms. Said movie is entirely about Pee Wee looking for his lost bike.

And it's a classic of western literature -- The Odyssey, Don Quixote, MacBeth, Pee-Wee's Big Adventure...

Awesome.  The full scene for those who need a refresher.  And if you've never seen the movie, then you're a defective and must report immediately to your designated movie watching station for an upgrade.

At least he got there before our typical cops who would have just gone in and shot them all.

Word on the street is that the rats there were said to be from the same place Petco gets them from and the officer wanted to obtain some of them for interrogations.  It was quite a clever ruse to set the building on fire and then disappear the rats in the middle of the "rescue".

"Don't want to confess?  HOW ABOUT SOME RAT SCRATCH FEVER....DO YOU FEEL LUCKY PUNK!?!"

More like the current version of "wow, you're so clever" with emphasis on sarcasm.

Look, I'm a very pro-cop guy, but we do read a few too many stories of the cops showing up to make an arrest (often the wrong house for some reason) and killing a dog.

That being said, the cop in this story really is a hero. Bless him.

I had no clue about the reference either and I'm probably in the 'older' end of the spectrum.

But I'm English and my entire knowledge of Pee Wee Herman is that he was caught masturbating in a porn theater, and he takes a while to die in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie.

I hope he fell in love with one of the puppies or kitties or ferrets or whatever & will adopt it once the veterinarians are through giving it the care it needs. He deserves a loving companion to remind him of his bravery.

Plus he did a scene with Johnny Depp and Bobcat Goldthwaite in Blow.  Bobcat asked if anyone in the scene was NOT on probation?
Johnny Depp: What did you do?
Bobcat: Lit the chair on the Tonight Show on fire
Depp: Right, I remember now
Bobcat: You punched a photography, that's cool.
Pee Wee: Looking nonchalant and whistling quietly to himself."

Me too.  Having seen the movie well after my childhood was over, I was non very entertained by it.  And yes, the only thing I remember about him is the theater masturbation charge.

Meh.
