We have two pet rats, but we got them from a rescue, where they had been quarantined for over a month. Really awful to hear about this happening, though. Rats make awesome pets, but you have to make sure they are healthy.

Probably easier to sell that line of thinking after more time has passed since the last rat related death. Im sure rats are lovely when they arent , you know, causing children to die without warning. Top Tip: dont go to the funeral to tell folks how awesome rats are.

So I guess my parakeet and first rat are/were respectively imaginary? As well as most of the contents of my dad's 55g fish tank?

Whoa. Mindfreak.

To be fair it's not exclusively a problem with rats, you can get quite sick from any kind of scratch or bite really.

I feel for both the family and the rats.  I hope they didn't just have both rats put down after the kid died.

I've been playing with rats for a couple decades now, and I've never heard of this before.

I don't think they should be spouting off about who should know what about rats when they didn't even bother with getting a companion (a non-sexual one, that is) for Oreo.

Yeah cause other larger four-legged canine pets never kill children without warning either.

The only thing that keeps me from snapping over that one is imagining that everyone who does it is using shoddy speech recognition software, which mistranslates "would've" and "should've" into the utterly nonsensical, but similar sounding, "of" versions...

Hyperbole much? So, basically, because one rat was sick, they all are? They DO make great pets and don't bit nearly as much as other rodents that people often get simply because they are scared of the word 'rat'. We've had rats for years...we've never been bitten (unlike when we had hamsters, gerbils, cats and dogs), and they are smart and social. But I don't see how defending rats on Fark equates to going to the boys' funeral and making a scene.

I can see how someone would think a rat they bought at a petstore would not carry disease. But wtf trying to get your rats to breed, what kind of parent thinks that's a good idea.

Some trolls just seem to be under the delusion that when people's deaths are posted to Fark, that the families of the deceased must also be here personally overseeing the comments or that posting a comment in said thread is an invitation to the deceased's funeral.

I used to breed rats for both selling as pets and as food for my snake.  They make AWESOME pets, but even though I knew my rats were healthy and well taken care of I would still tell people I sold them to that they needed to take them to their own vets to get them checked out and make sure nothing was wrong with them (money back if there was something wrong with them, there never was).

CSB-Named one rat Harry because he could figure out ways to open the cage no matter what I did.  I would come home about once a week to find him just sitting on top of the cage, proud as could be that he had gotten out again.  Cage would be completely locked up, no other rat out, except for him.  Baffled me for the entire time I had him.

/Never trust a new pet is perfectly healthy.
//Feel bad for the family.

Can you imagine the poor parents having to explain it to family friends.

"Oh, how'd your son die?"
"Well... you see, thats a good story... we bought him this rat, which ended up biting him and gave him a fatal disease".

2014-02-26 09:33:19 PM
And it can be fatal if not treated.
