Google 'Joe's ancient mead' if you would like to try making a very good, easy orange mead.
You can thank me later.

I was into mead before hipsters parents thought about making hipster babbys and before it was cool.
Hot, mulled mead.

After years of progressively worse malt beverage "ciders" (Hornsby's, Redd's, I'm looking at you.) pushing the good stuff off the shelf, I knew the hipster cider trend was over when I saw this:

And now, we're only a few months away from Stella Artois Honey!

Suckmaster Burstingfoam: My great great great great great great great grandfather Aethelstan was into mead before the time before it was cool.

And he had a wicked beard too. Ironically. As in he used a cold forged iron blade to trim it.

Why hello there cousin! Direct descendant of Wulfnoth Cild here. And I do like my mead. My current fave is Dansk Mjød Viking Blod, and is a Nordic mead (yeah, I know some hate on it) with hibiscus and hops added for flavor. The recipe supposedly dates from the 1500's , and it is a nice 19% ABV. Very tasty stuff.

Stop liking what I don't like!

Actually, I agree.  I hate hoppy beers, but do not get offended when I see a lot of IPA's on the beer menu.  I just order something else.  Problem solved.

So, as someone who kind of likes cider but finds it too sweet, what brands do you recommend that are nationally available that are still high quality and not as sweet as, say, woodchuck?

UK ciders like Strongbow and Magners are good options for easy to find ciders. Try the Magners on ice in the summer on a hot day. My horrible mother-in-law loves that one and it's the only the I respect about her. Crispin in the green can is an English dry, I prefer that with hot buffalo wings. If you find anything called a scrumpy you'll probably enjoy it. Unfiltered and cloudy looking, sometimes even a smoky flavor.

Makes sense. Hard Cider is so 1930s Depression.

Mead is more in line with fantasy literature and sexy stuff like Game of Thrones.

We have an entire bar in SE Portland that is nothing but hard cider. They make their own and have a decent tap selection. Best bottle selection I've veg seen anywhere though. Bushwhacker - if you're in Portland and want amazing cider, it's a must. I wasn't big into cider until I moved to the PNW. Too sweet corporate mass produced shiat wasn't for me. Our cider up here though is epic, high gravity, dry, scrumpy, and eveyprythung in between. Hell we have dry hopped ciders that are epic. Two Towns Cidery out of Salem OR is well worth checking out if you're up here. The Bad Apple at 11% is no joke and is delicious and the Brightcider is on draft at many places in town.

I always thought cider was a girls drink, turns out it's amazing and perfect for crippling alcoholics like me.

/ask me your cider questions, it's my favorite shiat.

insertsnarkyusername: Mead is nice but I prefer it blended with some sort of fruit wine. That's what I'd really like to see, you can't buy a decent fruit wine barely anywhere and I live in the land of hipsters.

In the US, apparently, rhubarb is legally a fruit, so I can in good conscience say that you should go buy some of Prairie Berry's rhubarb wine. That stuff was probably the best purchase I made on my way through South Dakota (though the tickets to see the Badlands, Mt Rushmore and Crazy Horse were all worth it).
