caira: Yes, but how come the only game on the pay channel is the one with the team people will actually want to watch?

I'd have to check the schedule, but I'll bet that they're keeping the schedule clear for the NBA.

Sun 6/22 2:30 p.m. ESPN United States vs. Portugal

WTF?

ABC and ESPN are both owned by Disney.

Yes, but how come the only game on the pay channel is the one with the team people will actually want to watch?

Think about it, they know people will want to watch that one so they are more likely to sign up for a TV package to watch it meaning ESPN gets more money.  They paid a lot of money for the TV rights so they have to (in their mind) recoup as much money as possible.

Some countries require events of compelling public interest to be available on free-to-air television.  Last I heard, the UK considers the entire WC finals to be in this category.  At any rate, I'm sure at least England's matches will be on over-the-air TV (BBC I imagine).

Sounds like some pinko commie bullshiat to me, comrade. This is America - free-market capitalism is what made this country great.

Three Lions open against Italy.  Could be the World Cup's first one and done right there.

I like the USMNT chances.  It's probably their strongest team in decades.  Any other group and they'd be through.  But if they can beat Ghana by a couple of goals and catch Ronaldo after a heavy night of partying AND if Germany has already locked it up . . . then maybe they squeak through.

Uh...why the super early kickoffs, for Europe's sake?!  Fark that!

It's probably the best we've had...problem is we were put in a GoD.  Then again, the US somehow makes it out of that group top, nobody would want to play them.

Belgium:  A team that could either be crushed by lofty expectations, be someone's dark horse or both.

Right now their striker situation is iffy at best.  Lukaku's injured and looked gassed before the injury, Benteke's been out of form all season.  Maybe Hazard as a false nine?

Chadli's big enough to play the 9 like a target man if they truly needed him.

Those times are Pacific. US ET start times are noon, 3pm, 6pm for the first two matchdays (with one 9pm game); then noon and 4pm for matchday 3 and the first two knockout rounds. Final is 3pm ET. In Europe, the games start late afternoon with a number of games beginning after midnight in Eastern Europe. The England/Italy game is at 11pm in London, and midnight in Rome (but perfectly timed at 6pm in NYC).

I can't wait for the time some people stop pretending they find soccer interesting.

Coming from Australia, where pay TV is still seen as a bizarre, overpriced luxury, I'd've thought the extra ad revenue on free-to-air would've made up the difference.  (Someone else did point out the NBA, which would make more sense).
