What global warming, right?

My hard right neighbor was telling me that the polar vortex is causing the ice caps to grow. I can't find anything to disprove this claim but I didn't want to call BS on him. No snopes, no politifact. But I am damn sick of this stupid cold winter.

Ok, I found something.

Antarctic ice caps grew, the Arctic ones (the ones causing all this crap weather) shrunk to it's 6th lowest extent since 1979. Polar Vortex mentioned in September 2013.

I suppose it still doesn't really prove anything in the global warming/climate change debate.

Alaska was having a heat wave while the whole freeze-the-south thing was going on, so it's reasonable to assume that the Arctic ice levels were negatively affected by the shift in the vortex.

Keep in mind that the extent levels are only an indication of how far out the ice reaches. It doesn't consider how much ice there actually is. The ice isn't just receding, it's thinning as well.

Good lord, I've had to fill my oil tank twice this winter, at around $550 each time, and that's with supplementing it with my wood burning stove and keeping the thermostats at 62, I still have a quarter tank left, and if I have to drop another $500 on another refill before it gets warm again, I'm gonna be pissed.

One of the articles I read meantioned the expansion of Antarctic ice may be due to cold water runoff and then freezing in the ocean.

Oh, there's been a lot more than three this winter. Every time a re-enforcing blast of cold air has come down, that is part of the "polar vortex".

The cold I can deal with, but the shoveling and darkness?  Not as much.

This has been one of the worst winters I can remember here in North Jersey. I hate the cold, I hate shoveling, I hate the darkness, I hate cabin fever...I pretty much hate everything about winter.

The polar vortex is always there, over the poles. So, no, the polar vortex moving away from the pole would not likely result in increased ice cover at the pole.

Supposed to be warming up again in the part of the state I'm in.  Looking at low 40's by the end of the week combined with the daily 5+ minute gain of daylight.

Time to start prepping the boat...

It's 25 degrees here in central PA. With the global warming factor it feels like 15 degrees. The forecast is calling for an another inch of climate change by morning.

antidisestablishmentarianism: My hard right neighbor was telling me that the polar vortex is causing the ice caps to grow.

The ice cap would have grown more if that cold air had stayed in the Arctic instead of coming down south. Can you make ice cubes faster by leaving your freezer door open?

And the cold weather is just a local effect. Overall, January 2014 was the 3rd warmest January since 1880.

Because to many, that little circle is the world.

I live in Roanoke, VA and I have met people in their 50s who have quite literally never been more than an hour's drive from their home.

I would advise you get with the times, and gut your old oil burning furnace system and replace it with a multie tiered electric heat pump forced air system.  honestly.. you've already spent 1/2 the money for the  upgrade in fuel costs already just this one season, and it's only gonna get worse.

central VA farkers on OIL heat?  I got a tank of fuel oil in the back yard that you can have for 1/3 the going market rate if you can haul it out yourself. I'm scrapping the boiler and its assorted works and keeping the tank the make a trailer grill

Thank God for Global Warming.  I'd have frozen to death by now without it!

2014-02-25 07:57:27 PM
They are going to find me frozen under a pile of dirty ice and snow clutching an empty bottle of whisky sometime in April.   Damn this winter has been a rough one. I'm usually pretty tolerant of Chicago's cold winters, but this year has been particularly unpleasant.  I'm really sick of my apartment, really damn sick of it, and even more sick of the giant piles of dirty snow and ice everywhere and of my stupid neighbors who keep throwing their crap in the street to save 'their' parking spots.

22 days of below 0F/-18C days so far this year, with more to come this week (possibly breaking a 129 year old record for cold days), followed by another possible snowstorm.  Damnit.

When the temperature drops below 45 heat pumps can't keep up and you convert to straight resistive electric heat, which is really expensive.  Natural gas is usually the way to go, but you need lines in the house to support it.  Most older houses use the oil.

Heat pump??? After 2 years of living in a house with a heat pump I am OVER it.  I cannot wait to get back into a house with natural gas where the air coming out of the vents is actually warm and I don't have a 400 electric bill every freaking month of the year.  Heat pumps suck.

Am I the only one that's gonna comment on the fact that the guy is having a rough time getting words out of his mouth?  It's like the peak of all the people who've been told not to let an impediment get in their way are realizing their dreams.  Freaking movies with speech impediments all over the place are distracting.  Christian Bale, yeah, his voice was gravelly for Batman, but it was also like he was channeling Sylvester.  Suffering succotash!
