I've gone from 394 to 262 lbs since January last year. My BMI has gone from a terrifying 56.4 to a still-scary-but-dropping 37.5. Just through a change in my eating habits (nothing fancy - more fruits and vegetables, fewer calorie dense foods) and getting more active. Myfitnesspal is something I highly recommend, although I really only used it in the first few months while getting my habits established.

If you're in the same situation I was in, you have to be open to the idea that weight loss is not impossible. Try really hard for a week. Then another week. Then a month and pretty soon you start getting confident that you can get on top of your problem.

Also, is it really all that difficult to believe?  Food here is incredibly cheap and easy to get.  Of course obesity is a problem.  It's been a problem since the first day people saw our vast plains and said "Yes, this is a fertile land and we will thrive."

/that was before the sudden but inevitable betrayal
