(Politico)   White House petitioned to make MLB opening day a national holiday to "ensure every American can exercise their inalienable right" to baseball. Getting election day off is still socialist though   (politico.com) divider line 29

Just as soon as MLB moves opening day to May 1st, and the world series ends before October 1st, I'll be in agreement with you.

Everyday should be a holiday.

I think opening day as a holiday is a fantastic idea.

Well at least I would get the day off to watch my Cubbies lose..... there is that.

Say do they have a 5th starter yet?

Super Bowl Monday >>>>> any day of the MLB season.

Sadly subby more people being able to vote is a partisan political issue.

Sure, because the problem with America is definitely that professional sports gets put on the back burner and is given such minimal attention and fawning over.

F#ck any of you retards who think this is a good idea. If the adults don't get the day off to vote for the leader of the free world, you d-bags don't get the day off to drink beer and participate in vicarious athleticism based on your slavish devotion to whatever professional sports franchise bought into the town you happen to live in.

They should put the Super Bowl the day before President's Day.

/American Football does too!!

Here's a simple idea:

Move Election Day to Monday.  Open the polls on Saturday, keep them open until Monday.  Declare Election Day a national holiday.  Pass a law that every single working person in America must have at least one of those three days off, barring extremely exceptional circumstances.  Problem solved.

/unfortunately, it's not a problem that everybody wants to solve.

It's already a holiday in cincy. The most requested day off in the city.

European Football is more boring than either.

Baseball teams have 162 farking games a season, missing the first one due to work is no big deal.

/Seriously, that's way too many games and I LIKE baseball

You don't want the poors to have a day to be lazy and possibly vote do you? That's just socialist.

The day after the Super Bowl should SOMEHOW be a holiday, if only because so many of us are hungover. Isn't that known to be the day where the most people miss work, anyway?

Why not? The Aussies have a national holiday for a horse race.

This is a petition with 500 signatures.  I'm pretty sure the ban violent video games petitions get more support.  The article even compares it to such important, weighty issues like giving Vice-President Biden his own reality show.  The only reason we are even hearing about it is because Budweiser thinks backing it is good for publicity and, judging by the existence of this thread, they're right.

It's just a joke petition.  Lighten up.

Fallout from allowing kids to skip school for the Superbowl party?

Tell you what: MLB Opening Day can be a holiday AFTER the Chicago Cubs win a World Series, other than the one they won in 1908.

The sun will become a red giant before THAT happens, so keep taking Opening Day either as a vacation day or a sick day, you baseball fans.

It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt.
