McConaughey has become a really great actor. And actually while I loved watching "The Wolf of Wall Street" I feel "American Hustle" is the better movie. Plus it has Amy Adams and her sex appeal. I want to buy the edited version of American Hustle where the only scenes shown are the ones with Amy Adams in it.

I like DiCaprio as an actor but Matthew McConaughey nearly stole that movie in a single scene.

Seconded.

She may not be as hot as Jennifer Lawrence IRL, but she had way more sex appeal, at least in that movie. The bathroom scene at the dance club really got my blood up if you know what I mean.

I don't get why the internet is rallying around this guy.  He's a big star and has tons of money and yet I usually find him to be the weakest part of whatever movie he's in.  This is a millionnaire superstar who doesn't need any sympathy from the public, let alone any additional accolades.  Besides, plenty of big stars have never won an Oscar.  Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Will Smith, Tom Cruise, Glenn Close, Robert Downey Jr., Julianne Moore, Johnny Depp, Amy Adams...

Sh*t, Matthew McConaughey showed up DiCaprio in the short scene he had with him in Wolf of Wall Street. DiCaprio is just this generation's Tom Cruise. Nothing more.

'And the winner for Best Actor is.....Matthew McConaughey'.

American Hustle was good, but not Goodfellas good. The redeeming aspect of Wolf of Wall Street to me was that I saw the movie after reading the book and I can honestly say that this is one of those few times where the film's portrayal actually elevates the source material.

And for my own personal take WoWS is the only movie that doesn't ooze Oscar bait.

McConaughey actually said "alright, alright, alright" when he walked up to the mic after winning the Golden Globe last month (in case you didn't know).

I've long thought McConaughey was a capable actor. DBC and Mud seem to indicate he's back on the course to really utilizing that capability. I figure it will only take three or four more performances like that to wash away the stench of a decade of shiatty romcoms.

Because the Academy frowns on actors who do a bunch of poop roles when they can clearly do better (sorry, Brad Pitt and Bruce Willis), and Titanic wasn't his fault.

Agree with you. I saw most of the nominees and enjoyed them, but the only one I can see myself wanting to buy and rewatch on some weekend 5 years from now is Wolf of Wall Street.

While I've enjoyed DiCaprio's acting, I've never seen him lose an Oscar and think we was robbed.  He's an excellent actor, and he'll get it one day, but he hasn't been the best actor in any particular year so far.

I would've said "The Aviator" but Jamie Foxx was tremendous as well.  I think that year really had to have been a coin flip.

Unless Dern's 'doing this forever give it to him' overpowers the voting....It's McConaughey's to lose:  Just a fact.  It really is truly great work, and he and Leto deserve every award being thrown at them.  DiCaprio is great - he just has the shiatty luck to be great in years where other people have better parts to be great in.

McConaughey is the man right now:  If you haven't seen True Detective, do it, so when he wins the Emmy for Best Actor in a TV Movie, Miniseries or Special, you will understand why.

Hard to argue with. I though Leto was a hell of an actor back when he did My So Called Life, and he's only gotten better.

I want to know what movie all the people calling American Hustle "the best movie of the year" were watching.  It wasn't terrible, but there was nothing that special about it either.  It was well made and worth seeing, but not worth seeing more than once.  I enjoyed Gravity more and Gravity is a terrible movie (that is incredibly well made).

He's gotten to be too big of a movie star so he can't lose himself in a role.  Same thing with Tom Cruise, Will Smith, George Clooney, etc.  You never forget that you're watching Leonardo DiCaprio.

/Clooney has an acting Oscar because he wasn't going to win a directing Oscar that year

It's like you've read my mind!  I honestly could not figure out what I was missing for this tongue bath AH seems to get:  Just was freakishly underwhelmed.

I will say DiCaprio achieved Chaplain-esque brilliance in the Lamborghini scene in WoW:  The physicality of that was jaw-droppingly good, and funny as hell.

Did the 1st half of the AMC theatre's Oscar marathon last Saturday. Watched: Philomena, Dallas Buyers Club, Wolf of Wall Street, and 12 Years a Slave in one fell swoop.

Philomena was a major surprise, an amazing movie. I wouldn't be surprised if Judi Dench wins for that one. I also agree that Mathew McConaughey deserves to win for his role in Dallas Buyers. WoWS was ok - nothing amazing. I thought the same for 12 Years and American Hustle.

Her will make your blood boil:  Phoenix not getting nominated for that is wrong on levels I can't even fathom!  He could have easily taken Bale's spot, and made this a real horse race.

And do NOT count Streep out of best actress:  She out-Streeps herself in August:  Osage County, and makes a wretched, awful woman sympathetic, without going saccharine to do it. ( (For that matter - Roberts, frankly, deserves her supporting actress nod, and, probably, the win:  Didn't know the girl had it in her!)

I'm still miffed about "All Is Lost" not getting an best picture or acting nods. Just a single lowly nomination for sound. That's a shame.

Man, I am sorry, but I love Martin Scorcesee movies as much as anyone, but I absolutely HATED the Wolf of Wall Street.  And I honestly couldn't call what Dicaprio does in the movie acting--he just talks loudly using his phony Boston accent.

The only redeemable part of that movie was the 5-10 minutes Matthew Macodsflkjslkjdjflahey was onscreen

American Hustle was the most fun I had at the movies all year. Just a master filmmaker enjoying every effing scene with total brilliance. I saw Wolf afterwards and it was like Russell stole most of Scorsese's magic. Wolf was good, but AH was just a brilliant director at the top of his game.

Fav film of the year was Her, though, which will never get the level of respect that it deserves.

2014-02-25 06:05:29 PM
While I HAVE liked some of the movies he stars in. I have NEVER liked him as an actor or believed that he was ANY of the characters he was trying to portray for even a single  moment. Aside from pretty boy roles, which he can barely pull off he can not  act at all. Want to see the REAL rancid  acting abilities of Leo? Check out his portrayal of J. Edgar Hoover!

The real Hoover, as weird, mendacious, and corrupt as he was left tougher turds in the bowl that were tougher that Leo could ever be!

One of us has bad taste in movies. I thought both Gravity and AH were pretty good movies. But I'd say it's probably you. If you said Gravity was an average movie then I'd say sure, I could understand that. But terrible? I think I'm getting trolled. I've seen some horrible bad movies but Gravity doesn't come close.

American Hustle had a good plot and strong performances. I'm not saying it's a Criterion film but it's pretty good.

Not only that, he's a rock star, he's 40+ but looks half his age and he's pretty to boot. (His hair is a shampoo commercial reality.) One of these days I am waiting for "Jared Leto missing" headlines to appear because his deal with the Devil finally came to an end.
