The bad news for Man Utd is  that they have never lost to a Greek team, and David Moyes has his sights set on breaking every record.

Whatever happened to the Man Utd team that put 5 past Bayer Leverkusen? I miss those guys.

Dammit Arsenal! Why couldn't you beat Napoli in the final game of the group stage? If that had happened then you would be playing Zenit St. Petersburg today instead of licking your wounds from the Bayren Munich game last week. Win your god damn group for once in a freaking while and maybe just maybe you won't get Bayren or Barca or one of the other powers in the first knockout stage.

/It shouldn't matter if Arsenal did draw Bayren Munich as they still should have played a much better game than they did and you have to beat the best to be considered the best.

Should be a good one in Zenit. Dortmund need a pick-me up, and Zenit don't look so hot recently either.

Is this considered attractive football? Are they going to shake hands?

/I actually liked the film. I hope the lead actor doesn't run out of bon vivant Englishmen to portray.

Simple: blame Wenger.  His ego writes checks his teams can't cash.

Should've gotten more than just Ozil and Flamini in the summer.  I want to give him a pass for January because everyone overprices their talent...but sometimes you have to just go for it and overpay for someone.  Arshavin was a good example of that.  Jelavic when he went to Everton was another example.

If Sanogo didn't look competent the last couple of games he played, people would come down on Arsene like a ton of bricks.  Even so...you always plan for what could happen instead of doing nothing and hoping.

They had Bayern going before that red card.  That and Ozil (WHY?!)...that would've been a very different game had he scored.

Hey, Zenit? The game started a couple of minutes ago. Thought you guys would like to know.

Apparently this is the round of the away wins.

Of course, now that I've said that, look to Moyes and United to fark that streak.

Pretty much.

Also, I'm at work and can't watch this on TV, so I'm watching it on FoxSoccer2Go. They have two audio tracks: one is the crowd noise in the stadium, the other is the commentators. For some reason, my feed really doesn't want to play both of them at the same time. For most of this match, it's been either one or the other.

0-2, and it could have been 4-6 to Dortmund. Don't know what's up with Zenit, but they have got to get it together to somewhat salvage this tie.

Gotta agree with this. I still think that Wenger needs a Dein in his corner, so he can give him a list of players and how he rates them. Arsene is an incredible manager, but he's not a very good negotiator for players. He has a number in him mind that says what a player is worth, Arsenal lowballs the bid and gets outbid by someone, and they push away from the table. It's happened over and over and over, and I don't see it changing this summer. We'll identify a talent that can really change the Arsenal landscape completely, Arsenal will make a lowball bid, and the player will end up going to another team that is willing to bid higher. I respect Wenger's parsimony most of the time, although the tiring exercise of watching us lose out to players every transfer window is maddening. And it's because Wenger is operating on a different valuation set than the rest of Europe and won't change.

The Juan Mata saga was a prime example of that; Wenger's the opposite of front office officials who bid against themselves to get a player.  He thinks he's the only one with a line on the player and thus, he can bid "Y" when the team asks for "X".  Then he's shocked when another team says "Yes, we'll pay 'X' for him".

It's almost like he needs to be humiliated on a certain level for him to change his tactics.  That happened with both S***s and Bayern last season.

We've secretly replaced Dortmund and Zenit with Liverpool and Swansea from Sunday. Let's see if anyone notices.

Tom Cleverley is starting. This should be good.

Young and Valencia both starting. I think we could see 100 crosses tonight.

I like Tom Cleverley. Like most all of United's players, the current formation and style of play doesn't suit him.

Reminder that Nani and Cleverley can play (Occasionally :-))

Playing for a draw, or squeak out a win...more than right. If we come out of Athens with a draw, or even a 1 goal loss, I wouldn't be worried at all.

Within three minutes. Looked pretty harsh to me, though.

Olympiakos' highest CL finish was quarterfinalist during the '98-'99 campaign. Eliminated by Juve.

Fark that. A club as big as United should not be playing for a draw against Olympiakos.

Tactically, Moyes is a dinosaur. I thought the Palace match was a sign that he was adopting to a more fluid, modern style, but here we are back to giving defenders concussions from heading away 50 crosses.

The first rule of winning the Champions League is never loose games. If you can't be good then be impossible to beat.

Didn't work for AEK Athens. They tied 6 times in the group phase and went off to the UEFA Cup in 2002-3.

It worked for Chelsea who knocked out Barca over two games and Bayern to win the CL and every Italian team to ever win the CL

Seeing all these mentions of Olympiakos' unbeaten league run, has Bayern lost in the Bundesliga this season? I don't think so.

There's a slight difference in class between Barca or Bayern and Olympiakos, and by slight, I mean not one player from Olympiakos would sniff the bench for either of those teams. I would have no problem with any side playing for a draw at the Camp Nou or the Allianz.

2014-02-25 03:15:05 PM
Olympiakos are getting really dive-happy near the box. Getting irritating.

2014-02-25 03:15:17 PM
My latest theory is that Moyes knows he won't win the CL, so he's using the opportunity to put a few players in the shop window, in the hope they might get picked up some small-market teams in the summer.

Too cynical? Or exactly cynical enough?

2014-02-25 03:15:52 PM
Moyes is borrowing from the Jose Matchkilling Playbook. Except he forgot the part where you have to be winning in order to play like this.
