No where in that article does it mention how the Vikings loved Spam.

I'm pretty sure the term "Viking" denotes a member of a perennial-loser NFL team with the most defeatist fan base in the country. They're already making excuses for why the team won't win next season, FFS.

Skol, Viking's, let's lose.

I've long wondered just how crazy pre-Christian Scandinavian women must have been, that so many of their men fled to the relative sanity of Irish women.

The Viking lifestyle - and it was a way of life, not an ethnic group - was driven by a desire to get rich quick. Whether that involved robbing tombs, trading slaves or committing massacres, they did what was necessary to become rich and famous.

So someday we are going to dress up as Nigerians?

Pretty much.  I wonder if there's a single regional and/or ethnic group that doesn't have something of the sort somewhere back in their history.

Honestly, I'm amused that this is a thing, this white-washing of Viking history.  I mean, they're pretty much defined by their motivations and methods.  This revisionist crap regarding their behavior is akin to suggesting that the Soviet gulags weren't prisons but rather wilderness resorts for Soviet survivalist types there voluntarily.

2. Vikings were a brave but mixed lot. Blood and riches.
3. Yay museum exhibit for trending back towards realism; everyone should go see it.

So what's your beef?

So three Viking ships land on the beach outside the village and Eric the Bloody turns to the first ship and says, "You men will be doing the looting. Start with the gold in the church." He goes to the second ship and says, "You will be doing the pillaging. Search every house and hovel and bring back anything that may be of value and what we don't want we'll toss overboard. And as he walks over to the third ship one Viking says to another, "Oh great, we're going to get stuck with the raping.  Again."

There actually was a movement a few years back to try and "rehabilitate" the Vikings as misunderstood basically peaceful traders.

Sure the Norse did run many peaceful trading missions, but the word Viking was originally a verb...meaning to go a-pillaging.

Vikings robbed in one place and sold the loot in another. They burned towns and cities in some places and founded them in others (in Ireland and Russia, for example). They were by no means simple looters and rapists. They very quickly turned into Englishmen, Irishmen, Dutchmen and, ahem, Frenchmen. Even into Italians.

I am reading a book called The Norman Conquest and I am getting some early background, it's around 1050 in the book. It's amazing the extent that the "vikings" had on England (Normandy) in the early years, did you know that the title "earl" is derived from "jarl"?
That said, this group was good at war and exploring, not so much arts and sciences.

ArkPanda: A lifestyle of robbery, murder, rape, and enslavement.

So... basically the same as the warrior/landowner class of every other human civilization at the time.

The Vikings, as they're kinda pointing out here, weren't the entire civilization, they were the subset dedicated to conquest and the acquisition of spoils.  It's not like the Christendom didn't have an entire estate dedicated to rape and pillage, too, it just mostly pointed it at the muslims and had too shiatty a navy to operate well over the water.

Oh, wait, Christianity's version of slavery was totally not slavery because you were attached to and sold with the land and not directly, except when you were, and because your role was to farm and you wouldn't have to fight 'cause the second estate had your back... except when you were.  And you could even marry who you wanted!  ... except when you couldn't.  I know it's nothing alike because the Church said so.

If anyone is interested in some reasonably accurate Viking fiction, pick up Bernard Cornwell. (Author best known for the Sharpe series which, funny enough, is my least favorite of his stuff.) He claims to have Viking ancestry, which led him to research and write some great stuff on Britain in the time of the (mainly) Danish raiders.

I don't know why Scandinavians think they have Viking ancestry. The really successful ones left to raid and then realized that becoming nobility was an easier and better way to steal than violence that destroyed their victims. People descended from the Normans have more true Viking ancestry than the wimps left behind and maybe that is why Scandinavia today is so peaceful and non-violent.
