I love that part in the movie where Gary Busey says, "Charlie don't surf."

Why does there need to be a point break remake? The first one was near perfection. But I guess this is for the under 20 crowd? Because they can't appreciate the classics.

Isn't Gerard Butler like 45?

Is it possible he's a little old for that role?

2014-02-25 10:55:31 AM
I guess Swayze was 38 when he did it. Still, seems kind of old for and extreme thrillseeking surfer. Guys that age who do "extreme" stuff always seem to be desperately clinging to fleeting youth.

But who's going to play the prepubescent boy love-interest opposite Johnny Utah?

This is one of the dumbest remakes ever.

It's the same shiat with Robocop and Total Recall. And Carrie. Who in their right mind would say that any of those remakes were better than the original (granted, I didn't see the Carrie remake but I have friends who have and they said it was lame)?

In the 70s and most of the 80s, either one had VCRs or renting movies was a pain in the ass. So if you missed a movie in the theater that was it. And there were far fewer remakes then than now, when you can just download the original for free or whatever nominal monthly cost some service is.

Anyway, they already remade Point Break, only with car racing instead of surfing.

Doesn't the term "point break" have to do with surfing? Some movies need to be redone, this one does not.

OK, but who will play Warchild?

2014-02-25 11:04:21 AM
Gerald Butler was good in 300, but he seems very "off" for this role. Not that this remake is a good idea, but Owen Wilson could have really pulled this off, his first charismatic villain role.

johnnieconnie: Why does there need to be a point break remake?

Because places like Fark will obsess over it for years, repeatedly bringing up the upcoming remake, which effectively works as millions of dollars off the publicity budget. Everything of any notoriety will get remade over and over because it would be financially stupid of them not too while the financial incentives are set up like this.

And will he back off this time? And was that piece of meat in Mexico really Rosie?

Those questions, and others like it, are why this remake is necessary.

I watched the Total Recall remake. It was ok, but unnecessary. I'll probably skip Robocop, and watch it later on DVD. I thought Dredd was much better, and if it was promoted as Dredd, instead of Dredd 3D, I think it would have done better (at the theater).

I was actually kind of interested in the Carrie remake, because of the casting. I thought it would have a chance to be pretty good. However, when they aired the previews I saw at the theater right before another movie, I noticed that they showed practically every scene! You knew the ending from the previews. I know this happens a lot but for a horror/mystery movie, what is the point?? If you were too young to be familiar with the original movie, then what was the point of seeing the movie after viewing the extended previews?? Is this what Hollywood really thinks the younger crowd expects? And then they are disappointed when a movie doesn't do as well as they wanted. Hollywood thinks movie fans are stupid, but I guess it's been that way for a while.

Why does there need to be a remake? There doesn't. Why does any movie "need" to be made? There isn't a reason.

They're remaking a campy fairly stupid 80s action movie. Because they think they can make some money from it. That's the only reason and really who gives a shiat except Farkers and other "omg Hollywood is ruining my childhood" imbeciles? It's not like they're desecrating hallowed source material.

No matter how hard you try to nostalgia Point Break into some sort of classic piece of cinema, it was a standard 80s flick that happened to have people in it that became famous so got a cult following. It wasn't Citizen Kane, maybe someone else can make it into something noteworthy.

Probably not, it will probably blow like most other remakes. But hey, luckily no one forces you to go to the movies or rent DVDs of things you don't want to see. So you're all safe, no one will force you to watch the remake of a shiatty 80s movie.

You know, they should remake  Speed, but not on a bus again. Change it to, I don't know, an air port or a huge office building or something. And put in tons of awesome 80s style one-liners.

Nah if they made movies like that there's no way they'd end up on constant rotation on cable or anything.

Not to be pedantic but it was a "90s" movie. And actually it was actually pretty good, as an action movie.

But it does not need to be re-made. And I don't see Gerard Butler as Bodie. Unless, as with the few remakes that actually work, they go in a different direction completely from the original and go in a different direction,

Without surfing, the title doesn't even make sense. If they insist on doing this, they should just call it something else and add "Inspired by Point Break" below the title.

2014-02-25 01:02:55 PM
the things that make the original Point Break so outstanding as a terrible movie ("I! AM AN F! B! I! AGENT!"; characters named "Warchild" and "Johnny Utah;" etc etc) cannot possibly be duplicated, at least not in the frame of a remake. This is why Fast & the Furious was enjoyable. Same plot, same ridiculousness, but you're not expecting it in quite the same way, because it's its own thing.

N4LG4s: The original Point break had an "R" rating.

It was a fairly pointless R rating.  You saw a couple of boobs, and the violence only got gory when they showed spatter and bleeding out after a gunshot, which was fairly unnecessary to the story.  If they could get "Taken" to be PG-13, a Point Break remake could do it pretty easily.

In most cases, I'd agree with you - moving from R to PG-13 is a pretty terrible move.  In this case, it wouldn't be a big deal, assuming the intent is to have the general mood of the original.
