it seemed they were not planning on jumping in the car, it looks like he was planning in steering it from the driver side window or something or did they think they needed to help the bus pull the car?

There appears to be no YouTube original source for this because the video first appeared on the Russian site "ролик".

Article: http://msk.kp.ru/online/news/1670678/ (google translated)

This happened in Moscow, not some hick hinterland. Some excerpts;

All this happened in front of the police [video]
Accident near the metro station "Academic" can safely claim the title of "most ridiculous accident years." Video is destined to become a hit Yutuba. In two hours, with the appearance of the network Pulley scored almost fifteen thousands of views and hundreds of comments.

 ...
All this show was almost in front of the traffic police inspector, who at that moment passed by. VAZ driver and his passenger caught a few seconds after the stunt. Than for them run the race for the trolleybus - is unknown. Under hooliganism is hardly misses. But the owners of broken cars still need to try to prove that the accident is considered an insurance event. Lawyers companies can challenge this assertion. After all, "Lada" in the time of the accident did not go themselves. Most likely, for the broken parts have to collect from kulibinyh in court.

Ummmm it looked like you could easily push it to pop start it. WHY exactly would you hook it to a bus?

My bad, other sources specifically say it happened in Saint Petersburg which also has an "Academic" metro station. I can't find a source that says who the giggling female videographers are.

It's definitely St Petersburg. The article says it was on Grazhdansky Prospekt near the intersection of Nauka, which are both where the Akademik Metro station is in St Petersburg. Moscow's station is on different streets obviously. And here is the Google street view showing the bus stop. The distinctive kiosk is right behind the light pole. The girls laughing at it are in a large multi-story office/retail building on the other side of the street.

Thanks, Hairbolus. So they intended to cause the accident for insurance but had no other way to get the dead car going fast enough to produce a convincing collision. What's odd about that explanation is that it's my understanding that most people only carry collision insurance (they only cover the other person's car in the event that they cause an accident). No fault insurance is very expensive and that is a major reason that so many people have dash cams. They are desperate to prove that accidents are not their fault. So, for the intentional collision theory to hold these guys would have needed very expensive no fault insurance on an older car which, at least in the US, would have immediately drawn the suspicion of the insurer. Kind of like buying a life insurance policy on your husband the day before he accidentally drinks antifreeze.

And there is both a Burger King and a McDonald's over there on that side. Things sure have changed since the Soviet days.
