Why do pearls inserted under the skin cause bone to die off in that area?  Did anyone else get that far down in the article?  Is this common knowledge that I've missed somehow?

In east Asia, including parts of China, tall buildings often avoid having a 42nd floor because of tetraphobia - fear of the number four because the words "four" and "death" sound the same (si or sei).

In Markham, Ontario, Canada, new residential developments will have no house numbers that contain a 4, thanks to a by-law pushed through by a city councilor caving in to the Chinese community here.

Strangely enough, these folks have no problem with 4's on cards when playing poker.

I'd guess an immune response that managed to also kill off the marrow in the region.  That or somehow it set up a leeching effect, pulling the calcium out of the bone near the site.  I'm just taking a stab in the dark, though.

Technoir: Markham, Ontario

In some states you can't buy alcohol on Sunday because superstition is policy. A large percentage of our population wants to restrict a woman's right to choose abortion because they want their superstition to be policy.

It's because the Chinese word for 4 sounds like the word for 'death'. Same for the Japanese.

So when I got my Japanese ex wife a plane ticket back to Japan, I got her seat 44. (double death!). I booked her through a Japanese travel agency and the lady aksed why I wanted that particular seat. I told her it was for my ex wife, and if the plane crashed that seat would be extra unlucky, and maybe she'd get sucked through a turbine. The lady told me that wasn't nice and that she wasn't gonna give me that seat. I reminded her that I'm the one paying for it, and I can ask for any damn seat I please. I don't believe that 4 (or any other number) is unlucky, but she did, so that was good enough for me.

I also got her the longest series of layovers and connecting flights I ever saw. She had to get from a Northwest Fl regional to Seattle to get to the overseas flight. The flight I got when from NW FL to Atlanta to Chigago to Orlando to Atlanta (!) to Seattle. About 18 hours worth of flight and lay overs. And when searching though the meal options I was going "Hmmm, bland....kosher....vegitarian....AH! Muslim!" Apparently Muslims get (her words) "A farking mushroom sandwhich!"

The best thing was that that series of layovers only cost me about an extra 40 bucks over the cost of a 1 layover flight.

Yeah, I was feeling a little spiteful...

Well, your stomach has acids that'd break it down. Pretty sure you'd be sitting with a toilet behind you and a garbage can in front of you for 24 hours if you ate it after putting it in Coke.

I am sure that if he refrigerated it after putting it in the coke for 24 hours he'd be fine.

I recall some recipes can call for marination in coke, however, ass with any perishable, you need to refrigerate it.

Guy, no offense, but stop getting your science lessons from facebook/internet linked videos.

I too came to ask if anyone knows a scientific reason for why his bones were eaten away. My assumption was travelling infection, but I didn't see that plainly stated in the article. If the pearls were only inserted into incisions in his skin, that quack doctor would have had to cut fairly deep to put them right next to bone, and it didn't look like they were from the xrays.

2014-02-25 07:49:20 PM
No idea about China but in Japan, in certain (gangster!) circles it's a "thing" to insert "pearls" (or rounded bits of some other materials) under the skin of the penis to make bumps, which I what I thought this article was going to be about.

If you go to prison, they check how many you have on the way in, because you're not allowed to put any in there, while you're in.

Nope. True story. I agreed to buy her plane ticket back to Japan in exchange for getting "her" (techincally mine) car back, but since I was rather pissed at her at the time, I felt like farking with her. I think I had to get on the phone with the tavel people for the US side of the flight to work out what I wanted to do, and it took some time, and cost a little extra, but it did happen.
