I've watched both. But I'm weird like that.

// stopped watching when it became apparent that it was not "The Bawdy and Ribald Adventures of Downtown Abby"

I originally hated how soapy and over the top it got, but I haven't managed to finish this season now that it's the boring day to day operations of the Abbey.

I tried watching it three times and just couldn't stand it.  Awful crap.

Just watched the first episode this weekend. It seemed like an interesting show. Does it really get that bad?

The first two seasons are really good. The second season is probably its best. The third is OK. The fourth is just train-wreck awful.

I've only seen whatever season just ended because my mom loves it and the computer is near the tv. But. It's terrible. It's General Hospital with British accents and a better wardrobe budget.

The first episode I saw was the rape one. I couldn't roll my eyes hard enough.

I just don't understand the appeal of billboards turning left at 200mph.

Why is it that nobody laughs in a period piece? They act like jokes didn't exist before1955.

It's watchable as long as Maggie Smith is still on the show.

Sometimes the drivers crash and die, and then they sell commemorative plates to decorate your trailer with, so it's not all bad.

What an incredibly expensively-shot soap opera. I want to slap every entitled upperclass twit and every downtrodden under-butler. I want to put my foot up those footmen and twist it.
God, they even have an evil, twisted gay servant. How do they get away with that shiat in the 21st century?

Really? I couldn't understand the appeal? It seemed like your typical PBS show geared towards seniors. Then again I also didn't find True Detectives that interesting. It was like watching the Killing in Louisiana.

Of course in both cases we watched less than an episode but there wasn't anything there to pull me in

Good point. I've known a lot of gay people in my life, and NONE of them were anything but morally upright.

Thank you all for your input, but I will continue to enjoy the show.

Get away with what?

I miss the 1970's, when you could watch "Masterpiece Theater" and occasionally see boobies.

How do they get away with perpetuation of the myth that gay men are all scheming, twisted caricatures? It's something you used to see a lot, but it's well past time to let it go.

Heh, well I've known some who were a little questionable, but I've yet to encounter a twisted, scheming  queer of the type perpetuated in the movies, and in Downton.

It's one character. Someone has to be scheming. It just happens to be the gay guy in this show.

Do you have other examples?

You could start here...

...and here...

I also offer Baron Vladimir Harkonnen from Dune, Frank Thring playing just about anybody, HedonismBot from Futurama and (though he was married, he was clearly effeminate) Darwin Mayflower from Hudson Hawk.

This has definitely been a thing, and it shouldn't. Not any more.
