As opposed to?

What do you think would have happened in this exact incident had some cowboy decided to go after the 'gunman'? I'm guessing that the police who responded would have seen a guy holding a firearm in the vicinity of the 'attack' and shot him.

This is serious post-911 business.

You should have seen the police in SoCal when Christopher Doyner was on the loose last year.  They were driving in tailgating groups of 3 squad cars at a time, and shooting up  people and cars that either didn't, or just barely matched Doyner's description.

I'm pretty sure the sgt / supervisors were distributing adult diapers to the popo on duty to stop them from wetting the patrol cars everytime they saw a vehicle that matched Doyner's description or a black man.

Oh for the days when the fake guns were 1903 rifles rendered incapable of firing anything anymore. Now most of the rotc departments are armed metal clubs intricately designed to look like rifles, at the same weight and size.

I wonder if the rifle range cadets still carry their competition rifles at port arms with ammo in the pockets each morning when they go out to raise the flag, and each afternoon when they lower it.

CSB:  Eons ago when I was a young ROTC cadet we were doing a 10K ruck march (run) early in the morning.  We were in full gear including "rubber duckie" m16 replicas.  The course had us jog through campus and various residential side streets before entering a large ranch where we'd run in the hills.  It was a pretty normal event and we'd done it several times without incident. Well this time the Commandant forgot to notify the sherriff that this would be happening.
Someone called 911 and reported a gang of 10 heavily armed men running through their neighborhood.  When we got into the dirt roads of the ranch just about every police car in California charged up and surrounded us.  Cops emerged guns drawn just like in the movies.  We all looked at each other like "WTF?" then it dawned on us through the gentle reminder over the PA that we were all holding very realistic M16 replicas.  I dropped mine like it was on fire and did as the nice policeman ordered "LIE ON THE farkING GROUND!"
My buddy wasn't so lucky, he had snap linked his m16 carrying handle to his LCE  (Something you're never supposed to do). He could not relieve himself of his "weapon".   Luckily we weren't in LA or they would have just shot him.  After some rather terse instruction they had him kneel, legs crossed hands behind his head and one of them dis-armed him.

I had started the run with clean underwear, I went commando on the way back.

My ROTC campus shut the door on the program until they got their Federal funding cut off. Then (with egg on their face) they invited ROTC back.

Well at least it was a replica weapon instead of someone with a music case or something equally silly.  Thanks to the media people don't realize mass shootings are very rare.  I can't imagine what would be the result of a typical day in hunting season when I was in high school would be today with students coming to school with guns in their cars.  I will admit we have to be reasonably concerned about such incidents given the loss of life and the apparent growth of such events, but the total freak out that people have over innocent things these days is counter productive as they teach people to ignore warnings as they learn most are just a mistake.

You haven't panicked until a cop with an M-16 tells your class to get on the ground because there's someone with a gun in the hall

A) that wasn't an M-16
B) Why would I panic, there is a friggin cop with an AR-15 there to protect me in case my handgun isn't enough.

None of them got even a slap on the wrist for shooting up people/vehicles that posed no threat to them and did not match Dorner.

To be fair, it's doubtful the officer responding would have the ability to keep himself from shooting all his rounds at anything that he felt was a threat.  That's how cops roll.
