Looks like it worked fine to me.

Most business signs are way easier to locate at night.

This might be a better way of doing street view for certain applications.

But really, is there anything worth seeing in La Crosse WI anyway?

What god has the people in that yonder land offended to cast them into eternal night when their neighbors two blocks away are free to frolic, dance and live in the light of day?

I've sometimes wished there were both day and night pictures in street view - it's hard to match a visual reference in some instances.

I've never used Street View for anything but looking at weird things people found in Street View.

A gas station that doesn't make cash customers prepay. It wasn't even in a nice area.

Works for me too, helps me re-trace my steps. Last couple times I was in La Crosse, it was really foggy.

/reaaaly foggy
//almost blackout foggy

I've used Street View to find phone numbers that are printed on the awnings of NYC bodegas so I can have dinner delivered

That confused the fark out of me... I haven't seen a Shopko anywhere outside of Utah, so for a second, I thought it was just showing my local area, but in a special 'night view' setting of some kind. That's funny though... Is there a story to go with this, like a reason why Google would choose to include this one location as a nighttime location?

My guess is the Street View car with all the cameras was accidentally still turned on when they were driving back to the office or wherever they store those for the night.  And maybe they have an automated system where once a photo is taken, its logged, and taken off the task list for the next day's travels.

Evidently there are floating (c) 2013 Google signs all over La Cross, WI.

Relatively Obscure: I've never used Street View for anything but looking at weird things people found in Street View.

I use both Street View and the bird eye view on Bing regularly to identify site related objects while working on a new project out of state.  The latest thing I was looking at was the site sloping 12 feet towards the front door in an area prone to microbursts and monsoon rains.  Turns it out wasn't anything to be concerned about.  The site has massive drains already in place.

/Architects love these overheads and street views.

I've been out of Wisconsin for almost 10 years, and I know exactly where that is just looking at the photo.

I miss that ass-backwards state.

I worked at a Shopko while in high school.  I have no idea how they are still in existence.

2014-02-24 06:47:01 PM
I once used street view to read a street sign before a trip. Going into SF, taking 6th Street exit from 280. I wanted to turn left at Harrison but couldn't remember if it would be legal to do at the time I would be driving through (otherwise I would take a different route). Pulled up the intersection on street view et voila!

Well, in google's defense, lol That is far from the most photgenic area around here.

No but it does have a river through a state college known for binge drinking.

I only use it to see my house so I can figure out when the pictures were taken.

The size of the oil spot on the road, and condition of the yard tell me they drove by around 6 months ago.

2014-02-24 08:46:14 PM
It gets far, far worse. Go NNW down that road there about 3-4 other pictures it suddenly goes from somewhere around midnight to high noon about the time you get to the Dairy Queen.

What happened was is they stopped at the Mirage for lunch and had a few drinks, and lost track  of time

It is actually really beautiful out there. The Bluffs along the Mississippi are gorgeous.

One of the prettier places in wisconsin, actually

It's based out of Green Bay, they have one like every other block around there.

Holy shiat! If you rotate the view to look a bit left, they caught a UFO on camera!

I had the same "WTF?!" moment, as it took a while to load and then go into Street View mode, so I was able to zoom out while it was still loading and curious why it thought I was in Virginia near Minneapolis.

There's some night street view images near where I work, I clicked the link to flag it for review, but they said it was good the way it was...

I find it very useful for when I'm going somewhere I've never been. It's useful to see what the building and neighborhood looks like without ever having been there.

Whenever I go on a road trip through an unfamiliar area, I run the route through Google Maps and then check any potentially-confusing sections in Street View so I know beforehand what to look out for. Was a huge help a few years ago when I drove a van from London up to Glasgow and back.

Once Google gets their Google Glass in every town, it will be.

Bizarre.  I'm right by Lacrosse, WI right now (for the first time ever...in town for about a week from Louisiana) and thought that the link was to some kind of alternate night-time Google street view and it just pulled up Lacrosse based on my current location.

Oh I have no doubt it's very useful to people other than myself.

talkertopc: I find it very useful for when I'm going somewhere I've never been. It's useful to see what the building and neighborhood looks like without ever having been there.

I find it absolutely not useful for this.  I mean, I guess I could look and see what things will kind of look like before I get somewhere, but I've never really needed to do that, and a regular map gets me around just fine.
