Another great episode. I love how casual this show is about its own central mystery.

Oh, FFS. This times infinity! I would make Mount Olympus shake if I got to be with her.

Rust telling that woman she should kill herself was cold.

Here's one thing: For seven years, Rust worked as a Louisiana state detective. For most of those years, he was single. He lived a pretty spartan lifestyle. Are you telling me that he didn't save up enough money to fix his tail light?

"You should kill yourself." Not even from a place of malice or revenge, just passing along some logical advice.

Also "Ow, my face! My doctor said I'm not supposed to get F-150s on it!"

He clearly keep it broken as a reminder of Marty.

Making Cohle's comment in 1995 about Marty making a "down payment" even more f*cked up.

That, and why spend the money on a tail light when you can buy another bottle of Jameson?

I stopped watching HBO's episode previews with The Sopranos. They made every upcoming episode look like Scarface.

Best theory yet from AV CLUB:

Improbable  True Detectivetheory corner:Rust is a vampire, hence those crosses protecting Tuttle from him. It's also why he stops short of touching the cross on the burned church in "Seeing Things" and why he's hung a cross in the apartment-that one keeps him on his toes.

We've watched every episode at least 3 times just to make sure we have a decent grasp on things...sometimes that has helped us to lose grasp though!

I wouldn't binge watch it. I think you need to watch an episode, let it digest a few days before watching the next one. There's a lot going on, and I think binge watching would make you miss a lot of stuff.

I honestly think that's another red herring. I have a feeling that it's gonna end with some seemingly, out of left field conclusion but when going back and watching the series again you'll notice the clues.

I sure hope Nic Pizzolatto has some more stories in his belt, cause anticipation for the next one is going to be through the stratosphere. It probably won't be too hard to get some more grade A talent to agree to just one season though.

And is there any literary significance to the chemical plant always shown in the background? Doesn't seem like it's important to the story but with what little I've read about the stories it's based on, seems like I'm missing a reference.

It'll be hard. I don't see how they can keep getting actors of this quality. I mean, I hope they can. It just seems impossible. Who's topping McConaghey in this show? Anyone?

plus the credits would suggest that the chemicals may have something to do with the personalities of the characters

Just watched that scene again.  Marty didn't break the tail light when he was flung against it.  He mostly got the middle of the tailgate.  Now I have no idea what the broken tail light means other than maybe some ominous foreshadowing about not being complete or prepared.

FTFA:  "I think we can rule out Reverend Joel Theriot - the revival preacher - as a suspect as well, although he did steer the focus of the investigation toward Tuttle's Wellspring schools. Were the schools a kind of front that provided a steady supply of abuse victims for Tuttle and his men? "

Theriot was drinking out of a John Deere mug.

No offense to Ms. Simmons, but she doesn't compare to Monaghan, who I've long thought is one of the most flatly beautiful actresses in Hollywood.

Great episode - thank God they tacked on the last scene otherwise I wouldn't have slept at all.  Notable fantastic dialogue:

A man's game charges a man's price.

He didn't who he was so he never knew what he wanted.

It's hard to trust a man who can't trust himself with a bottle

This whole series is full of amazing one-liners. It stuns me that a single author just comes up with all this stuff. Still my favorite:

I can see your soul in the edges of your eyes. It's corrosive. You got a demon, little man. I don't like your face. It makes me want to do things to it.  There's a shadow in you, son.

Though I doubt it, this is not completely out of left field.  It is possible that Rust used a mask, which plays prominently in the book The King in Yellow, and the poor girl that was tortured certainly did have quite the reaction to him.  I doubt it, but I guess it is a possibility.

Not if McCounaghy wins all the things, which certainly looks like might happen. Too early in the year to tell though. I could certainly see a good but been under the radar actor signing on for a career bump if the quality of the show lasts. Like Walton Goggins , for one example.

Both are amazing.  This guy may have passed peak Tarantino as my all time favorite dialogue writer.  I loved Ledoux's lines before Marty ended him too.
