I can name 3 living and many dead scientists. I am a fat old white US citizen from the midwest but I am NOT a republican and I believe in climate change so I got that going for me.

I would think that even without knowing much about him, a fair number of Americans would at least be able to spout off "Stephen Hawking".

2014-02-24 09:23:55 AM
I feel bad that off the top of my head, all that I can come up with are Hawking and Tyson, as far as living scientists. And one of those is due to Fark. But I still believe in climate change.

/also fat, white and from Midwest, originally.

It's a better article than the Fark headline suggested.

Because Farkers are intolerant, judgmental libtards, they think anybody who is not with them in the 16% "alarmed" group is a mouth-breathing teabagger nutcase.

The 16-27-23-12-15 alarmed-concerned-cautious-doubtful-dismissive split (with a few MIA) sets the stage much better.  A minority of Americans believe in climate change. A minority disbelieve. A large majority thinks it could happen, even if they aren't convinced it is happening. A large majority doesn't believe it's something we should be upsetting our lives over, say by giving up meat or moving into a carbon-efficient urban apartment building.

I'd think some of the wilder-eyed types should also be able to identify this guy, who shows up on a lot of WooWoo shows.

True. Especially since, if we assume everyone watches "Big Bang Theory," they're going to have heard his name on the show.

Well, okay. Maybe they think the writers made him up.

Shouldn't there be umpteen complaints about Dr. Sheldon Cooper being "nerd black-face" by now?
You squints usually get pretty spastic at the mere mention of his name.

Smart people became very uncool quite some time ago. Albert Eintstein was treated like a rock star when he arrived in the US. I don't think you can just point to one reason why Americans have fallen out of love with science. There are obvious ones, like the religious right, but I think there's more to it than that. Schools don't effectively handle science and haven't for decades, and I'm not just talking about biology and evolution.

I think that the reason a lot of people don't believe in global warming is because they don't want to make the sacrifices that may be required if it is a real problem.  They don't want to give up their huge ass SUVs, they don't want to have to turn the air conditioner down in the summer, etc.  So there will be a great appeal to people saying "Hey, don't worry about it, this is liberal bullshiat Al Gore whopped up to sell books."

There is an active and wealthy "movement" that encourage Americans to forget about climate change.

If you have a political affiliation then you instantly lose all credibility.

Most of the world can't name a scientist, maybe they need to rework their TV deal for a better network.

Most Americans believe the climate is changing but what they don't just automatically accept is that humans are the cause of the change.

Most likely true of every country in the world.
