Well... yeah.  It's been conventional wisdom for centuries that an older father produces weak/sickly offspring.  It took this long to prove it?

It took this long for scientists to be able to get sperm donations from older men without the Church or Mosque burning them at the stake or stoning them to death. And without the older men telling them to get off their lawn or they'll fill your sorcerer asses with buckshot.

JEHOVAH!

Hee, hee, hee, hee, hee!

Just because I can!

I didn't believe it until I got the results of my motility test back.

I didn't understand that QUISP could be an actual result.

Until the doctor had me look into the microscope it made absolutely no sense whatsoever.

Older fathers have higher risk of fathering a child with a disorder like autism

This isn't a "new" finding by any means.

That's why I jerk off at least twice a day. Keeps me and my swimmers young.

Yes, exactly one rib older--that's all it takes to make weaker offspring.

That sounds like the old joke: I'm 70 years old, but I've got the body of a 17 year old ...

No, I got that.  But a "rib" is not usually a measurement of time.  Plus, the story (and my comment) is about men much more than a few days older than the mothers of their offspring.

So, the joke falls flat.  But nice try.

You mean there are women-free vaginas and/or vagina-free women, necessitating the "and"?

If you got it why the hell are you pestering me with your question? No, I don't want an answer because its a rhetorical question. Something else I'm sure you got but didn't get.

Look, it is  lame enough to not get an obvious joke. It's even lamer to pretend that the obvious joke you missed you got all long but who cares because it wasn't funny anyway. That not just lame, that's really lame.

Because I got that and thought, since it made no sense to me, I must have missed something.

Jesus, man - it's really not healthy to care so much that some random person on the Internet thought your joke wasn't good.

Haven't most people been aware that as humans grow older fertility becomes an issue for both men and women?

Just another excuse to throw at my parents when they ask why we haven't had kids yet (hubby is 37 and some years older than me)!  Hooray!

Men should really be done having kids by 45 or so anyway, just so you can have fun and see them graduate. That being said...

The difficulty is that I don't really see any definitive numbers. I can only assume they'll be in the published study. The cogent points:

Are the numbers as drastic as the female fertility drop from 30-35?
Is the defect rate as drastic as the 35+ female?
What was the sample size?
Did the researchers properly control for the couple age? (an equally older couple vs older man and younger woman vs older woman and younger man are all variables)

No, it's called the Paternal Age Effect, and it's been known for decades.

I was going to talk about the article, but eff that, I want to talk about worlddan's terrible Adam and Eve joke that was not funny. Dude, it might have sounded funny in your head, but it was not. There is no standard of humor by which one could measure your joke and rate it as a success. By all means, be proud of it; you're at least trying, but stop defending it. Take a break, look at it, think about it. You'll realize it isn't funny.

Well, sure but most of them are at least ignorable. You think of something that tickles you a little, you post, and you move on. Never have I seen someone so energetically defended a joke so unfunny.

wouldn't it be safe to say that a parents age is a leading factor to defects / disease?
at least it sounds like a more plausible reason than "vaccines cause teh autism."
