special20: The famous photograph taken by Rosenthal was the second American flag-raising event of the day.

It was not staged.  The first flag was too small to be seen clearly from the landing beach.  The Secretary of the Navy wanted the flag as a souvenir and the commander of 2nd Battalion wanted it for the Marines, so he sent a runner up Saribuchi to secure the original flag and replace it with a bigger flag.  Rosenthal reached the peak just as the second flag was being attached to the pole.  He didn't even notice it was being raised until the last minute and got off a quick shot.

If you want staged shots, General MacArthur was the guy to talk to.
