Gene Simmons is selling a product, not a rock and roll band.

A few weeks later, Stanley tweeted that a reunion seemed "unlikely," and two weeks ago he blasted the "tainted, corrupted and distorted" Hall of Fame for being unwilling to discuss inducting anybody but the four original members of Kiss. "It was shut down immediately as 'a non starter,' which to me is arrogant," he told Classic Rock. "The fact that there are 30 or 40 or 50 or some absurd number of Grateful Dead members all inducted, the fact that all of the [Red Hot] Chili Peppers, including people who played on early albums that never amounted to very much are inducted, the fact that John Rutsey, the drummer on the first Rush album is not inducted, the fact that Rob Trujillo, who's a great guy but didn't play on any of the classic Metallica albums, was inducted after being in the band six years makes me wonder exactly what are the rules? If the rules don't apply to everybody then they're not rules."

That's not a bad point.

Cewley: why not get Willard Scott there? he's played Bozo and Ronald McDonald, and has more talent than any of those clown nominees.

It's not the Rock and Roll Hall of Talent. I don't particularly care for their music now (if my 8 year old self heard me say this he'd be stunned and deeply disappointed), but if you were a middle class kid growing up in the 70's, there was one objective, undeniable truth about music - Kiss was the hottest band in the land.

As much as I dislike Kiss, they deserve to be in. I mean come on. They pretty much defined rock at the peak of its mid 70s heyday.

rattchett: At the same time that Kiss were doing their shiat - so were the Ramones.  If you listened to Kiss in 1976 rather than the Ramones, and you were over the age of 12, you should be ashamed.

KISS sucks!

Yeah really guys, the Ramones were creating art!

Exhibit A:

"Beat On The Brat"

Beat on the brat
Beat on the brat
Beat on the brat with a baseball bat
Oh yeah, oh yeah, uh-oh.

What can you do?
What can you do?
With a brat like that always on your back
What can you do? (lose?)

See? That's deep and meaningful and not all a joke like KISS could be at their worst. I even like the Ramones and yes they influence a lot of bands, but the influence was more from their attitude than talent. They played three chords fast and had irreverent fun sing-along songs. That's about it.

/I actually like the Ramones

Yeah, KISS should be in there... There are plenty of arguments about some of the bands every year, but I don't know how anyone could question whether or not they played rock and whether or not they defined a specific era. Are they great musicians? No. Is Gene Simmons more interested in marketing than music? Sure.

That doesn't change the fact that a full blown KISS show is still one of the best concerts I've seen, costumes, makeup, blood, fireworks, the whole farking enchilada. Rock n roll isn't always about being a virtuoso, it's about the show as often as it's about the music, and KISS is among the best at that. They should be in the RRHOF, no question.

I just can't believe these egotistical bastards can't quit having their silly little spat long enough to play 4 or 5 songs. What a bunch of babies.

KISS is what rock & roll is all about.  4 ugly guys getting laid with big loud entertaining blues-based Les Paul-Marshall RAWK.  THey inspored more boys to play air guitar with a tennis racket (and later, a real guitar) than just about anybody.  Gene deserves a lot of the hate that he gets, but he's really tones down the asshattery lately and has even redeemed himself through charity and patriotism.  Paul is the one that runs the show now and he is a DIVA.  I guarantee these latest shenanigans are his doing, not Gene's who is on the record saying that he had no problem playing with Ace and Peter at the event.

Kiss did absolutely nothing for rock and was a 2-hit wonder.

/Fortunately, the E-street band was inducted this year. I'm happy about that at least.

gilgigamesh: think of all the dozens of 80s hair bands that never would have been but for Kiss - and they deserve recognition for that.

These guys will take issue with that:

I was in high school when Kiss got big.  I considered them nothing more than a gimmick with bad music.  Gene Simmons is the Steve Jobs of the rock world.  He stole every idea he ever had, packed it up nicely, and made a bundle.  And he doesn't have an issues with screwing his partners over in the process.

Novelty acts should have a place in the Hall of Fame. Kiss should be there right next to Weird Al, Dr. Demento, and Ray Stevens.

I actually don't hate the genre, gilgigamesh; I don't listen to hair metal now, but I have fond memories of making out to Ratt with my first (real, like boob touching n stuff) girlfriend.

I hate KISS in particular, and Gene Simmons individually and viscerally.

Deep Purple is still being punished for Smoke On The Water, and deservedly so.

Come on, if it wasn't for that song what would douchebags play in guitar stores?
