KISS (with Bob Segar opening) was the first 2 concerts I saw; once in DC and once in Richmond. This would be around 1976.

Mugato: Are there any bands that aren't in the RRHOF?

Any act that Jann Wenner doesn't care about.

The Monkees and Weird Al spring immediately to mind. The Monkees didn't play their own instruments on their first two albums, true... however, this doesn't seem to have caused the exclusion of any Motown singing-only acts (Supremes, Temptations, etc.). Adding insult to injury, the Motown band that did play most of the music on the label's albums (The Funk Brothers) aren't in.

Velvet Revolver is a much better band than G n R ever was. Weiland is a much better vocalist IMO... Hopefully they will get back together eventually.

SW's solo work is also really really good. Very underrated. Dude has really got some talent - even away from STP. If he keeps putting out albums like his first two, there's no reason to rejoin either band...

I had no idea until the other day that Neil Young did the guitar work on I Got Id... I always thought it was all Pearl Jam, but only members on it were Jack Irons and Vedder... Great track:

The Beach Boys didn't play on half their albums. Pet Sounds was the Wrecking Crew directed by Brian Wilson.

So the whole "didn't play" thing doesn't hold water.

The fact that you and I may hate that genre is really beside the point.

Good point. I still say that the "power ballads" of the 80s and 90s make Barry Manilow's music look macho. Why isn't Barry in the RRHOF? I also bet Barry, like most men, could kick Gene Simmons arse.

I disagree with that. I never really got into Kiss, but i had friends who were putting on full-regalia homemade kiss costumes and doing full-on mock kiss concerts in their garages, in fifth grade. They were more than a simple 2-hit wonder at the time, and I think that the amount of albums that they sold far outstripped their "pop chart singles" listings. When was the last time someone did a faux Daft Punk concert in their garage?

I mean, if you are looking solely at singles charts, you are probably seriously undervaluing a lot of rock/art bands from the seventies.

KISS is what rock & roll is all about.  4 ugly guys getting laid with big loud entertaining blues-based Les Paul-Marshall RAWK.  THey inspored more boys to play air guitar with a tennis racket (and later, a real guitar) than just about anybody.  Gene deserves a lot of the hate that he gets, but he's really tones down the asshattery lately and has even redeemed himself through charity and patriotism.  Paul is the one that runs the show now and he is a DIVA.  I guarantee these latest shenanigans are his doing, not Gene's who is on the record saying that he had no problem playing with Ace and Peter at the event.

gilgigamesh: As much as I dislike Kiss, they deserve to be in. I mean come on. They pretty much defined rock at the peak of its mid 70s heyday.

Yeah, KISS should be in there... There are plenty of arguments about some of the bands every year, but I don't know how anyone could question whether or not they played rock and whether or not they defined a specific era. Are they great musicians? No. Is Gene Simmons more interested in marketing than music? Sure.

That doesn't change the fact that a full blown KISS show is still one of the best concerts I've seen, costumes, makeup, blood, fireworks, the whole farking enchilada. Rock n roll isn't always about being a virtuoso, it's about the show as often as it's about the music, and KISS is among the best at that. They should be in the RRHOF, no question.

I just can't believe these egotistical bastards can't quit having their silly little spat long enough to play 4 or 5 songs. What a bunch of babies.

Except Weird Al's band actually has (vast amounts of) musical talent

Yeah, it's rather impressive when you realize that Al's band rewrites all of the songs they parody. I think a lot of people just assume that he sings over a backing track or something.

Another fun concert, BTW. Got to catch him about 10 years ago at the AZ state fair, and it was a blast, I'd go see Al again.

That's a little short sighted. Despite the obvious differences, KISS and The Ramones were actually very similar bands. They both had a heavily regimented, uniformed presentation. They were both led by somewhat unlikeable people (Not much difference between Gene Simmons and Johnny Ramone), They both made a big amount of their money through merchandising (Ramones sold more T-shirts than albums), and there was a lot of internal squabbling that led to members coming and going.

What if you listened to KISS and The Ramones? Does that make you someone who "just doesn't get it?"

No, I have listened to both - a lot.  The Ramones - everything.  Kiss from Destroyer to you name it.  There is a huge gulf between the two.  Yes Johnny Ramone was an asshole.  The Ramones did not make a huge amount of $ - not that they did not try.  But they were what they were.  They did not change to be more marketable.  Kiss are whores in the worst sense of the word.  They do what they to make the dough,  good music from them is a by-product -  a happy accident.
