(Syracuse Post-Standard)   It was a rough night for Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim. First he was ejected and his team lost to Duke. Then he was chased by the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man and attacked by sharks   (syracuse.com) divider line 39

I don't know what the problem is? The NC player rolls off his man and establishes position, the 'Cuse guy runs into him. It's a foul.

He completely melted down. I thought it was a bad call too, but Syracuse was still only down two with 10 seconds left and Duke was awful from the line. He cost his team there.

Even worse afterwards was Dick Vitale trying to say that the officials should've completed ignored his rant to keep him in the game. It was humorous watching Jay Bilas shut him down on that.

Vitale is just a Berman-esque caricature at this point. My thumb goes straight for the mute button any time he pops up.

Your eyesight must be just about as good as Tony Greene's, seeing as how they were playing Duke and not UNC.

welcome to ACC basketball, Syracuse fans, where duke gets the benefit of the most horrible charging calls you will ever see. 38 years and Jim Boeheim has never been ejected. 1 trip to Cameron Indoor Stadium and he gets ejected.

I don't know what it is about Boeheim, but I want to cock- punch him.

does boeheim still pick his nose on live tv all the damn time?

swear to god he once came out of halftime in the early rounds of the tourney in the late 90s/early 2000s with a half-inch piece of noodle stuck to his chin, and during a close-up on him, bernie fine leaned in, told him about it, and he brushed it off his face. my sister and i died laughing

It's the inconsistency, not just this play.  Earlier in the game Jabari Parker demolished a Syracuse player who had clearly established position who was called for a blocking foul.  Then, at a critical time in the game, the refs call charging on a much less obvious play.

Here's the deal with playing at CIS: 1) "mistakes" will always go Duke's way (clock mismanagement, possession arrow, etc...), 2) your players will be called for things Duke players are not, 3) K will be allowed to swear at the refs without receiving a warning.  I could be more detailed but that sums it up.

It genuinely depends on the Billy Packer Mid-Major Hater Quotient among the pollsters.  Those folks are going to ignore the fact that Florida looked pedestrian against a mediocre Ole Miss and lousy Auburn teams.  I have a suspicion Arizona will get a few votes, too.  And potentially Louisville for knocking off Cincy in Improper Fraction Arena.

Jim Boeheim has been a college basketball coach for 38 years.  38 years.  Before last night, total career ejections: 0.  0 ejections in 38 years.  Hall Of Fame career.  One of the best college coaches ever.  Classy guy.  Never lets his emotions get the best of him.  All it takes is one game at Cameron Indoor from the biased, pro-Duke refs.  I've seen this for 20 years.  Good riddance to the ACC.

By the way, the Jabari Parker non-charge with 8 minutes left was also an absolute BS call.

I don't really dislike Boeheim or anything (I really only have a passive interest in NCAA basketball to begin with), but while that was a seriously dodgy call that set him off, HE was ultimately the one that decided the game by giving the officials no choice but to toss him and award 400 free throws or whatever to Duke.

Down two points with 10 seconds left, even on the road, is far from insurmountable.

Well, duh. I meant obviously also with the other team having possession.

Bad call. (replay shows player "settling in") Bad reaction.

It is, after all. still a game.

2014-02-23 03:02:29 PM
Defender had established a defensive position and maintained that position after the offensive player left his feet. IANABR, but in a vacuum it seemed like a good call.

I think the much bigger controversy is the similar play that was called a blocking foul and also went against Syracuse. However, blowing one call isn't an excuse to blow another one.

Reason to be upset? Sure, very understandable. Inconsistency is annoying. Worst call of the year? Oh I sincerely doubt that.

/And don't give me any bullshiat about feet being set, that's not the rule

"I've only been thrown out once in my life and that was an exhibition game," Boeheim said.

The Duke player looked to have slid slightly to his right before contact.

That happens anywhere else in the country, in that game, and I have a hard time imagining it is called a charge.

The crew on the floor had no consensus, and one of the other officials interviewed couldn't decide either.

So yeah. I'm going that disagree.

Sorry that I went for the fastest option available in the short time I had to make the comment. How about page 79 of this pdf? Good enough for you, sir? How about the end of this article? How about this one? Or how about part 5 of this officiating memorandum? Is that better? Are you sufficiently served now? EABOD.

oh for the love. the duke hate is so over the top it's ridiculous and blinds people to reality. where was the outrage when rodney hood was clearly fouled going for the dunk up at syracuse at the end of OT? or how about christmas' two ridiculous flops that fouled out parker AND jefferson?? sure seemed like 'cuse got the better end of the calls playing at home. of course krzyzewski didn't lose his mind during the game and didn't use it as an excuse afterwards for why duke lost. maybe that's why he has 4 rings and jimmy b only has 1. the cognitive dissonance here is just mind numbing: ignore all of the above just to stick to the inane and hackneyed narrative that duke gets all the calls. hate duke all you want, but at least come up with something original.

Look, don't you know that college basketball season doesn't start until the irrational Duke pile-on can start?

Anything that happened before last night -- especially if it doesn't fit that narrative -- never happened.
