The rescue Siberian Husky I took in had mange, the first thing the vet said was when we started to treat her was to take a picture before and after. Well suffice to say, she's come a long way.

doglover: 4 mange cures

The woman who runs the dog rescue I used to help with has become quite a pro at curing mange.

It's not life threatening, it's just a miserable existence for the poor dogs.  It's gotta be like having full body poison ivy all the time.

It's amazing the way they heal up like nothing was ever wrong, if somebody just takes care of them.

I guess it's a good thing that I took the headline at face value...but damn if this didn't make me crack up from the admittedly horrible mental image of that.

Hero tag? But he's not even in the armed services, nor did he chase down, then run over, then shoot someone who stole $100 from him!!

He didn't even buttchug a demijohn of moonshine!

What kind of fark hero is this idiot supposed to be?!? Or is the father the hero for not beating the snot out of him for wasting food on street rats?

My grandfather kept a barrel of toxic waste out behind the barn. He was constantly bringing home strays that had what looked like bunches of grapes for ears. He dipped them, fed them then had them fixed. The place was like a huge no-kill shelter. My dad is the same.

Maybe not. Maybe the story will get some people to man/woman up and take in the feral dogs.

Either way, he's a young lad with a heart. Could you honestly walk past starving dogs each day and do nothing? We can debate the logistics, if you like. But, the point of the story is a little man with a ton of soul and his father has much to be proud of.

I'm sure the neighbors are happy to have all the mangy stray dogs hanging around their house all the time.

I'm dealing with this crazy cat lady trespassing on my business feeding "stray" cats.  Leaving dishes and cans of cat food all over my parking lot attracting more cats hanging around.  Police won't do anything but call her and left a message to speak with them, but she won't return the calls so they call it a day.  Even though she is trespassing and littering...  If she loves them so much, collect them and take them home!

Perhaps a better use of his time and money would be operating a lemonade stand or the like, and using the proceeds to pay for sterilization of the feral dogs...

Sorry to be a pisser, but that's not 'edgy', that's pretty much summing it up. Go read about how feral animals are a real problem in countries outside your own - you don't even need to look at third world populations, 2nd world will do. Try Spain first, and work your way down. Happy reading.

Nah, the article stated they were working on getting them clear of mange and rehoming them. I think they're on the correct path.

We have a ridiculous cat lady that owns an Asian restaurant near our business doing the same thing. Such a pain in the ass. She actually had like 30 cats living under her restaurant and the health department shut the place down until she got rid of them. She's like 90 years old.

But those are cats and I don't like cats. These are dogs and I love dogs. Therefore, this is ok.

Not anywhere near as bad.  Dogs are almost people.  Rats are not.

Another argument - humanity created domesticated dogs, so they have a responsibility for their welfare.

FTFA:The proud father now supplies the dog food for his son and hopes to treat the stray dogs for their skin condition and eventually re-home them.

He's a kid so he just saw a problem (hungry dogs) and tried to help.  He's obviously not going to be thinking of issues like disease spread and population control.  Now that his dad is helping him, sounds like they're going to try and get the strays out of the neighborhood by helping them get adopted (and hopefully neutered) and his son wants to grow up and start and animal shelter.

The story is just beginning.  I think it's a little too early to judge two people for not coming up with a fully viable, all encompassing solution for feral animals.

It would be better to not waste food propagating a very real problem in that part of the world. It would be better if his dad helped him take these poor creatures to a facility to treat them, or put them out of their misery, thus teaching the kid some pretty pertinent lessons about life.

It would also be better if the previous owners of these animals hadn't abandoned them, or if America hadn't re-elected Bush, or voted to have Osamacare forced on them. It would also be better if there was no religion in the world. Or jews.

Perspective, kid. Time to get you some.

There's a huge difference between feral dogs and stray dogs, and from the little information given in the article I would think they're strays. It's also a rural area, so there's not likely to be as many as you're probably thinking.

The kid is like 10. His plan was to feed and socialize starving stray dogs in his neighborhood so they didn't have starving unsocialized dogs running around their neighborhood. That's a pretty good plan for a 10 year old.

And if you bothered to RTFA - instead of just rushing on here to prove to us all you are a half-witted, knee-jerk contrarian with thoughtless negativity where your heart should be - you'd know that his plan actually inspired his father to help get the dogs treated for mange and re-homed. So that 10 year old's plan succeeded quite well in helping solve a problem for his neighborhood and alleviating the suffering of poor creatures who otherwise had no hope. So go fark yourself.
