GardenWeasel: a particular individual: Nowhere does the article say how old she was. That there is some fine reportin'.

She was the last surviving member of the musical family of seven brothers and sisters and passed away in her sleep at home in Vermont at the age of 99 on Tuesday, PEOPLE confirms.

She did nazi that coming.

Not von Trapp, but still a song from one of those great show tunes from the day. Gary, Indiana, Gary Indiana, my hometown.

zimbomba63: Kids loved that movie, I hated it.  Only movie where I rooted for the Nazis to win.  There was that one scene where they're trying to escape and the young Nazi wanna-be has them at gun point, I'd start shouting, "Shoot them, you fool, before they sing again!"  The wife was not pleased.

I rather like the first half of the movie but then it starts to drag.  I will admit that the goodbye/goodnight song I've always enjoyed.

eldie: Sound of Music was always one of my favorite movies.  Just wasted some time and did some reading on the Von Trapp family.  Some things I learned that I didn't know.  Maria (the deceased's step-mother, Julie Andrews in the movie) and the Baron were actually married in 1927 and their escape from the Nazis happened 10 years after.  Thus the children at the end of the movie should have appeared 10 years older.  But they wouldn't have been as cute I guess so liberties were taken with the story as usual.  Also, Baron and Maria had 3 children of their own who are all alive.  A sad thing I learned that the youngest Von Trapp child, Gretl in the movie (who had the sore finger) died at age 30 in 1951 from complications of delivering her first (still born) baby.  She is buried holding her stillborn baby, next to her father, the Baron.

The dust ... It's thick. :(

The movie was closely based on the show, which was loosely based on her story, which was about as loosely based on what actually happened.

2014-02-22 10:26:38 PM
She probably would have had an easier time hiding from the Nazis if she wasn't running about singing at the tops of her lungs. Heck, whole reason Anne Frank survived as long as she did was because she was mute.

That made me think about the Pia Zadora Diary of Anne Frank story. "She's in the attic!"

/yes, I know it is an urban legend, but the idea makes me chuckle

Yea, it is nice. This being Fark I'd normally make a snarky comment. But in this case, it's really rather heart warming what they did. I guess I'm just an old softy.

99

I have lived near the von Trapp lodge for neigh on 20 years.

I'm quite sick fo the balderdash about the entire thing.
It's become a gatdang side show what with the tourists and the skiers and the heroin junkie trust busting trustafarian kids spat out by the better then thou noveou riche coonts that spatter the hills with their coontry club land raping rent hiking real estate venture capitalist flatlander opportunist bastards that come to Vermont and try to make a killing on industrializing the landscape to incorporate a better, thicker portfolio for them selves and their snot nosed crotch goblins.

How do you solve a problem like maria?
How do you catch a cloud and pin it down?
How do you find a word that means Maria?
(one nun at a time)
A flibbertigibbet?
A will of a whisp
a clown

You dig a hole and stick her in it before she starts to stink.

You know, they had an entire ski resort built on top of Mount Mansfield on the premise that Stowe is a paradise in the winter time. The whole von Trapp clap trap is part of that marketing scheme. And rather than garner the correct and compliant permits for sewage, the newly built Octagon House restaurant just had a huge discharge pie fo rsewage that spwewed the craps and greases out onto the landscape in into the creeks, and waterfalls of the "Stoweside" of the mountain.

That is what industrialists will use local publicity for.

The von Trapp Lodge?
I won't say what kind of luck you would have as a cook, or maid there.

I do have a working knowledge of what happens when you let money take over and use mthology for its own purpose, however.

You know, it just amazes me how much great talent is available if you just Google it. I went to the Sound of Music but kept getting distracted by all the other awesome soundtracks. Those guys didn't have all the technical innovations we have nowadays and thus had to work so much more to stand out.

It's farking amazing what they did.

I don't know, the baron had that other babe, the countess, after him.  I would have chose her over Julie Andrews, who came off as too much of a goody two shoes.  The countess looked like she was ready for anything in the sack, plus, she had some ideas you never thought of.

/ Per the movie, wasn't the baron suppose to be in the Austrian Navy.  Austria is a land-locked country.

In traditional Catholic families that both the Von Trapp couple's family came from, naming a child Mary, Marie, Maria was very common.  How better to gain favor in God's eyes than to name a daughter after the "Blessed Mother."

For those confused about Captain VonTrapp being in the Austrian navy, it was actually the Austro-Hungarian navy which did have sea access (out of Pola, which really hasn't changed much) up until they lost WWI. VonTrapp was actually a Hell of a u-boat captain, which is why they wanted him back.

The countess did come off as a more modern minded woman who would be more sexually adventuress.  But she didn't have much use for the Baron's 7 children and stated her intention to send them off to boarding school.  In real life (as per Wikipedia) and in the movie, Maria was very close to the children and the children adored her and they did not like the countess.  As an added aside, also as per Wikipedia, unlike the movie where Maria appeared very attracted to the Baron, in real life prior to her marriage she stated she did not love the Baron but entered into the marriage because she was so fond of his children.  The couple obviously had some "fondness" for each other since they had 3 children of their own, all who survive today.
