This would have been good for me when I worked the night shift. Trying to find a bar that's open at 7am is not easy. The closest one to my house at the time was a strip club. But a strip club at 7 in the morning just sounded like the saddest thing ever.

If you need to drink at 7 AM you obviously have no faith in the Canadian Hockey team as you obviously are drinking to forget.
Bars being open to have people watch makes sense but last thing I want at that point is to be drinking

Boat drinks. Boys in the band ordered boat drinks.
Visitors just scored on the home rink.
Everything seems to be wrong.

Lately, newspaper mentioned cheap airfare.
I've got to fly to Saint Somewhere.
I'm close to bodily harm.

Twenty degrees and the hockey games on.
Nobody cares; they are way too far gone,
screamin' "Boat drinks," somethin'
to keep them all warm.

This morning I shot six holes in my freezer.
I think I got cabin fever.
Somebody sound the alarm.
I'd like to go where the pace or life's slow.
Could you beam me somewhere, Mister Scott?
Any old place here on Earth or in space.
You pick the century and I'll pick the spot.

I know I should be leaving this climate.
I got a verse but can't rhyme it.
I gotta go where it's warm.

Boat drinks.
Waitress, I need two more boat drinks.
Then I'm headin south 'fore my dream shrinks.
I gotta where it's warm.

I gotta go where it's warm.
I gotta go where it's warm.
I gotta go where there ain't any snow,
where there ain't any blow,
'cause my fin sinks so low.
I gotta go where it's warm.

We've already seen what happens when Vancouver mixes hockey and booze. You're in timeout until you understand what you've done wrong and stop setting things on fire.

Kidding though Vancouver and BC do have oddly restrictive alcohol laws. Are you still not allowed to have liquor and video game together under the same roof?

That's universal. Strip clubs catering to the sad graveyard remnants. Some working joes drinking stale beer and eating chicken fingers while watching some wreck gyrate out of sync to some song that they're all too old to know.

I enjoyed the "after hours" no-name-on-the-door bars in Vancouver when I lived there.. look around, lots of places to drink and smoke in Van, they just all don't have names on the door..

RockofAges: /the backstory is -- those guys are responsible for our version of George W. Bush running the place into the ground

We can have this blame-fight again if you want, but I still contend it was Ontario that birthed the spawn of Dubya, and it was Ontario that gave it a majority government, so it's Ontario's blame. Ontario. ;)

Western conservatism, and especially as it exists uniquely in Alberta, is a result of the people who settled the land in different waves from different locales around the world (the last open land rush took place on our prairies), vs those who settled in Manitoba or Saskatchewan and the different political leanings they brought with them as unique ethno-groups. Pierre Berton outlines it pretty good in "The Promised Land".

Is 5am early? 6am is when bars in CA can start serving, which works out pretty good for EPL (err..BPL, whatever) fans. Nothing like washing down a Jack in the Box breakfast with a pint of Guinness.

I spent a year in Alberta (Calgary and Edmonton) and I saw a whole lot of the fake cowboy crap, the worst drivers I've ever seen, an unnatural obsession with money that isn't matched in Vancouver and a massive right wing majority. I consider myself very lucky to have had the chance to live in as many major Canadian cities but I'd have to say that Calgary was by far my least favorite.

Also, almost everywhere in Winnipeg will be open for either an hour or half an hour before the game starts.

Kinda sad to hear that Calgary was the worst.  Admittedly, our drivers are occasionally out for blood, but only on certain roads.  The fake cowboy crap is aggravating to some of the native Calgarians, but it's a side effect of having 2 Universities and a Tech school, lots of college age students who are young and stupid in the ways of the world.

As for the right wingers, we actually sided with "not batshiat crazy" last time provincially.  The wingnuts won mostly up north or in rural areas, but I think they only took 1 or 2 ridings in the city.  Nationally, we sided with the cons, and we were conned.  It happens.  I think most of the country got conned, and we juust have the misfortune to have Harper in a city riding.

Wish I could get to the pub in time for the game, but nooo, got to stay until 8 am just in case, instead of celebrating days off with a hockey game with drink in hand.
