Target Builder: Revolutions and Uprisings are Serious Business

I don't think the Americans who scream that "democracy in the USA is dead and Obama/Bush/fill in the president/is Hitler-Stalin-Pol Pot-Mao-Voldemort" actually believe what they think they believe. To my mind, the simplest explanation for their lack of violent action to restore a stolen democracy is that very few people actually believe that democracy has been stolen. When these "activists" go to bed at night and their mouths are shut for the day, what they really believe is that things are kinda crappy but they still actually have their rights, that democracy in the USA works as well or as poorly as it always has, and that there aren't really any problems that can't be addressed with another round of ordinary elections. Deep down, they know that a revolution isn't worth it and isn't likely to make anything any better. For them, a nice peaceful little costume party in the street or even on the sidewalk is a fun outing, a way to be part of a rebellious subculture, maybe meet some likeminded people and new friends. It's not serious, and they know it.

I'm fairly sure if there was a Kent State 2.0, people would shrug and say 'Meh.' while Fox News would say the protesters deserved it and MSNBC would point the finger at the GOP for causing/encouraging it. And we'd have our 5 minute rage on a few Fark threads before getting over it and moving onto the next act of politics entertainment.

America is nowhere near being in the same category as Ukraine or any other despotic government. It is nowhere near 'Revolution' status, as much as I wish it was sometimes. People really don't care enough to revolt. They're placated with instant gratification, fast food, and television news entertainment. Compared to elsewhere in the world, Americans have it good.

Thanks guys, I don't actually have balls though.
Just a crappy digital camera and an overactive sense of justice.

Don't forget about us here in Turkey. Just because fewer people die than in Ukraine, Sudan or Venezuela, doesn't mean our struggle has ended. Without TOR, there is pretty much no Internet, all traffic is mandatorily recorded for 2 years, and it only gets worse. This was back-door fascism, nobody saw it coming, little by little the Islamic choke-hold was slipped into place. Insidious.

I eat pepper spray, tear gas, or whatever they put in the TOMA that temporarily blinds you and makes hot showers impossible for a few hours...most weekends.

I do NOT throw things, chant, yell or act aggressively.  I follow the action, record, and help injured people. I cannot afford to lose my visa.

There are other videos on my youtube page from the past few months. Please feel free to share them.

Most recent protests have been against Law 6518 which requires Internet service providers to store data on web users' activities for two years and make it available to the authorities upon request without a judicial order, and Internet service providers will face severe penalties if they fail to remove content deemed to be illegal.

A good defense is a rip-roaring offense.

And you can win. I won today.

Some pig pulled a "papers please" thing with me. I demanded to be cited. Fought it. I won. Now a civil suit that will cost my community a lot of money.

I'm a farking winner. Nobody farking tells me what to do.

Yup.

Looks like we got ourselves a bad-ass here!

...and here are some Ukrainians protesting what they see as a shiatty trade deal:

America really needs to step up it's game.

"That's not an #Occupy, THIS is an #Occupy."

Revolutions and Uprisings are Serious Business, and those guys are not farking around with an esoteric 5000 point plan to address every wrong felt by every person on earth

The problem with Occupy is not that they had no idea what they were protesting--I think a lot of them did. It was simply that the problem was being worked out and voiced publicly, causing the process of "figuring out the problem" to happen in realtime and thus be mocked by a soundbite-hungy media, and a public already eager to dismiss progressives.

In the US, the only protests given media credence are the ones orchestrated and astroturfed by billionaires...who coincidentally own a ton of the media. A ton of the media dismisses progressive activism, and so the public does, too. Works out well for the anti-Occupy billionaires.

But Occupy did its job--we all know what it was about NOW, don't we? To the point that it can be used as conversational shorthand. At the time, they seemed unfocused, but they really weren't. Just inexperienced.

In our media and entertainment-oversaturated country, we have a split problem of political oversaturation and lethargic apathy. Something is wrong with this country. I think most folks can feel it. But we're too used to shouting at each other and not used enough to the kind of debate that actually leads to action. Therefore, when people finally do get pressed too far and feel like protesting, their protests look "unfocused". People shouldn't have to spend years getting a degree in political science in order to justify protesting, just so they can sound like they "have it together". But that's what people expected of Occupy, instead of focusing on the valuable protest innovations within that movement.

The media of course capitalizes on this perceived failure, rather than seeing it as a symptom of their own influence; and sells the "Occupy is an unfocused failure" line back to a public trained to judgment and dismissal of actual action.

Occupy did something cool with its consensus experiment, but I think it's becoming clear that revolutions need leaders to speak for them, in order to not be utterly mocked by a lazy-ass media. I don't think the Ukrainians would have gotten as far as they did without spokespeople.

That's some cute revisionism.

It was a hiccup in time, and the folks who cling to it are generally those who supported it to begin with.

Ukraine had leaders who spoke for them, and when they were done speaking, they mocked them openly.

You have to have organization from the very start, and maintain that organization throughout, or the seedy militant types will capitalize on any gathered emotion and cause chaos - which undermines the effectiveness of the entire message.

It's the difference between having an adult conversation and screaming like a child who had their toy taken away.
