:19 "fark"

I might have said the same thing when a guy shooting roman candles is on one side of me while the truck with the jet water hose is on the other.

Stay safe, subbette.

You need to learn to go the other direction from water cannons and people carrying explosives (even if it's just fireworks aimed at people).  And definitely not get in between the two.

Kids these days need to learn the difference between a "protest" and a "riot".

What are they protesting about in Istanbul?

The PM is slowly creating a corrupt dictatorship and has a strong islamist bent in a largely secular country that would like to try some actual democracy  after decades of  US backed military rule (thanks Cold War politics!)

You know, I have to give all these other countries that have had protests toppling governments recently a lot of credit for having some hardcore protests.  I mean, here are Americans protesting against super Hitler-Stalin and the end of america as we know it:

...and here are some Ukrainians protesting what they see as a shiatty trade deal:

The PM of Turkey is pushing to make Turkey a lot more hardline-islamic and is acting like a dictator. In a fairly moderate country.

.. They're kind of pissed about this.

Probably the same thing as everywhere else. They have central banks that can fire up the fake money presses and print up what ever some want to be able to dictate their will, all the while stiffing the public at large with the bill for it all.

If you're going to protest, do it the easy way.  Be a group of useful idiots in an astroturf group, protesting against the very regulations that keep you safe from hazardous working conditions, toxic chemicals, and poverty.  As long as you aren't going against the biggest political donors, you'll be fine.

Target Builder: Revolutions and Uprisings are Serious Business

I don't think the Americans who scream that "democracy in the USA is dead and Obama/Bush/fill in the president/is Hitler-Stalin-Pol Pot-Mao-Voldemort" actually believe what they think they believe. To my mind, the simplest explanation for their lack of violent action to restore a stolen democracy is that very few people actually believe that democracy has been stolen. When these "activists" go to bed at night and their mouths are shut for the day, what they really believe is that things are kinda crappy but they still actually have their rights, that democracy in the USA works as well or as poorly as it always has, and that there aren't really any problems that can't be addressed with another round of ordinary elections. Deep down, they know that a revolution isn't worth it and isn't likely to make anything any better. For them, a nice peaceful little costume party in the street or even on the sidewalk is a fun outing, a way to be part of a rebellious subculture, maybe meet some likeminded people and new friends. It's not serious, and they know it.

Subbette once illegally parked behind the Statue of Liberty, flipped off the guards and got away with it.
