Yes, because when I risk my neck, it's a veterinarian I want around "just in case".

Fark!  You should be shilling for some sort of ObamaCare for pets.  I wouldn't spend that much on myself.

Me kid needed a new liver transplant. They wanted $1000 bucks for that. I said "screw that, I could get an Xbox One and a PS4 for that kind of scratch!"

Your kid = human. Human > cat.

The fact that you're too stupid to realize that is the only possible reason you could have made that post (aside from "troll").

Seriously, $4500 for a pet is nice and all, IF you have the dosh laying about.

What I am curious about is if lethalwan uses some of his wealth on human charities.

/not suggesting he doesn't

Huntceet: farking cat climbed up there it can damn well climb down.  Foolish to put yourself in danger to "rescue" a cat.

Cats suck at climbing down. Last time I rescued a cat (volunteer firefighter) I got cut up, not badly but enough to risk losing my hold. Previous time I got cut up bad (But that one was MY cat hehehe, so my bad). I had one cat that could climb down backwards (their claws bend backwards so they cannot do it going forwards) but that is not common.

Getting them down aint easy, doing it near a powerline would SUCK.

Congrats to the person who ... braved that.

it's all subjective. Valuing a member of our own species just because is stupid and nonsensical. We are not the end all of all life. All this human value stuff is due to our whole social tribe etc. developing in a way that has empathy. At the end of the day we are animals and will seek to better our lives as we can. This guy valued his cat. Nothing wrong with that. If I had the resources I would do the same with my pets.

Oh, I could afford that... and more as well... And don't get me wrong, I'm a cat guy... we have two beautiful rag dolls that I love to death... but if I was told I'd have to spend $4500 to save one of them, I'd be laughing myself silly as I called up the breeder for a new cat.

Phil Moskowitz: rustypouch: You are aware that for that money, you could get scores of healthy cats?

How many sociopaths do we have on Fark these days? Are your mirror neurons not firing because of recent trauma or has this been en entire life deal?

I'm not the dumbass who's spending thousands of dollars on a cat. Especially when you can get one for almost nothing. People are giving them away, and killing the ones that others won't take for free. You'd rather spend a ridiculous amount on one animal, than spend it helping numerous others.

Do you just care about the one?

People become highly attached to their pets. If you can't understand or empathize with this, then you're pretty sociopathic.

Someone hurting my cat would be one of the few things that would drive me to murderous rage.

Looks like it worked quite effectively, the cat didn't die, and yet there was an amazing amount of biatching in the comments anyway.

Cats are actually quite good at surviving a fall from quite astonishing heights. People, not so much, so a person attempting to rescue the cat is probably at greater risk than the cat ever would be. Include some power lines, and hell yeah Fluffy can be left to just get down on his own when he gets hungry enough. Which he will do eventually, and which is why you don't see any dead cats up a pole.

It's sort of like how much money would you spend to save your own children vs how much you'd spend to save some random child of complete strangers. There is going to be a difference. It's human nature to put more resources towards the things that are more meaningful to us.

You know you sound like a real asshole, right? Leave the guy alone. If he wants to spend $4500 on his cat, that's his business. You don't need to get all high and mighty about all the other helpless animals out there. If my cat was dying, I would do what I can with what I could afford.

Well, it isn't simply valuing them, it's valuing them more. It's an hierarchy thing: the further from me you get, the less I care.

Me > my family > other people > my pets > their pets* > etc.

Now, obviously there is wiggle room -- for instance, putting one's child above one's self. I just look oddly at people who reorder the list a little too much.

And this isn't to say "to hell with stray cats!" A cat caught up in a tree, I'll help. Doggie got his head stuck in a box? I'll help. Little birdie with a broken wing, I'll help.

Cat caught at the top of an electrical utility pole with live wiring? Sorry, kitty.

I mean, yay, the guy with the cherry-picker saved the cat; congrats. However, had he been electrocuted there would also have been a Fark thread laughing at the moran for such a stupid death.

* other people's pets, you fool, not my pets' pets!

How long have you had them?  I had a cat for eleven years and couldn't have imagined letting him die over money, let alone laughing at the prospect.

It's funny how people get defensive over THEIR pets, but won't hesitate to mock others who have a different preference of pets. One guy I met loved his cats more than his children, but when he heard about one of his friends' dogs getting hit by a car, e-mailed him a recipe for roast dog in hollendaise sauce, and honestly couldn't tell why anyone was mad at him. "It's not like it was a smart animal, like a cat."

/my opinion is, if someone cares enough about an animal to remember its name, then it's a pet, not livestock

What *I* am curious about is why the hell y'all care what lethalwan spends his money on? He earned it. Legally, one assumes. It's HIS money. He can spend it on his cat, on charities, on a naked hang-gliding lark over the Land of Overweight Airline Stewards if he wants, provided all involved are in agreement.

What's my opinion on his spending $4500 on a cat? See point (1) in which any opinion other than lethalwan's about how lethalwan spends lethalwan's legally-earned money is moot.

MOOT.

I've spent more than $4500 on a cat. A couple of times now, I guess. If you don't have the money you shouldn't, but if you do and (like some people, have no kids) go for it if it's what will make you happy. We don't have cats because they're cheap and we want to save money. We have them because we love them. Which is weird at the end of the day, but such is life.

Or when the crowd of people, the fire truck, and the dog that chased it up there have all left.
