We didn't want to kill them for who they were

We just wanted them to kill themselves for who they were!

Oh, okay kids, have fun!

They were dumbasses, not racists.  I too learned today wrestling dummies come in two colors, black or brown.

Jesus, you gotta wonder about the people who are trying to find racial issues around every corner. Since when did wrestling have anything to do with black people?

I'd need to see a picture to pass judgment.

If the dummy was black, and they were dressed in white hoods or Nazi regalia, then I'm calling bullshiat on the "suicide" scenario. If the dummy was white and they were dressed in wrestling singlets, then I'll accept the "suicide" scenario, but point out that a bunch of guys in tights were playing with a doll, and that makes them pretty gay.

Laws against issuing threats of lynching by way of KKK-themed blah blah blah have been on the books in many southern states for decades. Not unreasonable to assume they exist up North too.

Generally you can't threaten to kill people in any state, though

Exerpt:
The Phillipsburg wrestlers caused a firestorm by staging a photograph with a dark wrestling dummy hanging by its neck. The dummy wore a Paulsboro T-shirt, and two of the seven wrestlers in the photo wore hoods shaped into a point.

Their lawyer is doing damage control with the suicide story.

Is that a threat? If I recall, there wasnt an individual targeted.

Yeah.... I'm gonna have to go with "racist" on this one. Not vehemently, backwoodsy, "I-hates-all-darkies" racist, but just stupid, insulated, "product-of-their-white-parents-and-making-racist-jokes" racist.

The attorney's story seems pretty bullshiatty. No note in that picture. The hoodies are up in what looks like an attempt to mimic the KKK. The dummy is clearly brown. There's not a person of color among them.

Either way, it's pretty tasteless and should be punished. I don't expect jocks to have enough brainpower to know when they're being ignorant, insensitive dipshiats, but I do expect athletes to have a sense of good sportsmanship, and even if this is hanging the rival team in effigy, it's poor sportsmanship when you go this far.

Hey, but at least they didn't drug and gang-rape a teenage girl, then dump her in her front yard and pee on her. As jocks go, this noose is probably their idea of taking the high ground.

2014-02-21 09:13:35 PM
I recognize there is sensitivity to certain actions.  I accept, even though I disagree, that certain actions due to historical connotations deserve a harsher punishment than other offenses of a similar nature.  However, such enhancements need to be applied when there is fairly compelling evidence that there was a racist motive in the action.  Sometimes, people are just stupid, and they need to be educated just how piss poor their judgment was in an activity, but that doesn't mean they went in with that kind of intent at the outset. Reading in racism for every possible bad decision is undermining the ever growing tolerance and understanding that is spreading throughout society by focusing on the differences between groups which allows racism to persist.

2014-02-21 09:20:10 PM
How do you turn dumb kids (all of them) into smart kids?
You let them suffer the consequences when they do something stupid.
Do not insulate them from the backlash that happens when you do dumb shiat that other people don't like.
The way for them to learn is by experience.

Nooses aren't inherently racist.  Hanging people in effigy used to be a political statement.

/or western movies

2014-02-21 09:26:27 PM
I doubt it was either a lynching OR a suicide. Wrestling dummies are the color that they are--it's not like the kids could run out and find one specifically made in the color that they wanted (they don't come in "flesh colored" as the box used to say). And it does have the opposing team's jersey on--and we don't know the ethnic makeup of that team, either. There's no reason to believe it's any more diverse than this pack of junior douchebags.

I'm incline to think this was just a tasteless, stupid joke with NO racial undertones. So slam them for idiocy and thoughtlessness, but no need to make more of it than that. Racism needs a target, and unless they were specifically targeting blacks on the other team--they just grabbed the nearest wrestling dummy which happened to be dark, and hung it up. Not every stupid thing by white boys needs to be racist.

OR The hoodies are up because they feel they look more bad ass. It is quite a stretch to say they are doing it just to look like the KKK (especially since the hoodies are red). The dummy is brown because the vast majority of training dummies are brown. They are either brown or red, and normally brown.

Not everything is about race. These kids likely have no idea what the fark a lynching is and have no idea that hanging has historically been done to black people (and hence, a brown dummy being hung is not exactly a smart idea). These are high school boys; they don't think about shiat like that.

If this is the case, I can't wait for the Republican guilt over trying to fight tooth and nail against the Civil Rights Act of 1964 through the Southern Strategy.

For some reason, I can imagine some old conservatives hardcore blowing some big black meat for reparations.

I, for one, think that if they wanted to look bad-ass, they should have kept the hoodies low, partially obscured their faces, and bunched them into a point at the front a la "Assassin's Creed".

They'd still look like idiot posers, but at least they wouldn't look like KKK idiot posers.

Paulsboro has an African American population of over 36 percent. Sure there are a number of black wrestlers on the team. There should be consequences to the actions by Phillipsburg players. Stunt had racial overtones and with the high rate of suicide among teens, insensitive to show a dummy hanging himself. What happened to old fashioned pep rallies where you chanted "Go Phillipsburg, beat Paulsboro!!

You're right, this is also the way we should deal with people who make poor life decisions and end up with no discernible marketable skills.

And people who buy houses they can't afford.

And companies that make and sell products that no one wants to buy.

Then they'd look even more like KKK members, though.

Not saying the kids aren't douches, but there is really no reason to think it is race. They are 16 year old boys from NJ; they likely have no idea wtf a lynching is

When people reach adulthood, that's pretty much what happens. The consequences of doing any given thing is what it turns out to be, and different things have different consequences - that's why life is long - so you learn shiat.
