Tigger: KidneyStone: I'm having a hard time believing homophobia decreases your lifespans by 2.5 years.  I'm pretty sure there's a completely different factor here like maybe just not being an uptight prick all your life is more relevant.

Then again I'm not homophobic but I am an uptight prick.  Does it even out?

The causal factor is probably anger. Poor anger management is really bad for your ticker.

I'd go with this.... if you are unreasonably angry for ANY reason, your life span most likely goes down.

numbone: So if I don't care if you're gay I won't die early from heavy drinking, smoking and overeating?

I really, really, really, don't care if you are gay!

You should post about this in a few more threads, just to make it perfectly clear that you don't care.

Hey it's only 2.5 years off your life, and it's probably the diaper-wearing stage of your life. I'm not a homophobe but if I was, that really doesn't give me much incentive to change my thinking.

slotz: jso2897: slotz: I still think the word "homophobia" is a misnomer.  Doesn't "homo" mean either "human" as in "homo sapiens?"  Or "same" as in "homogeneous" or "homosexual?"  So wouldn't "homophobia" mean either "fear of humans" or "fear of sameness?"  I think the real fear is fear of GAYness, so to speak.  Calling it "homophobia" makes it sound like "fear of homos" and isn't that a little insensitive?

Just wondering. I could be wrong.

You are wrong. However, it's a bit more complicated - the original meaning of the term was medical - it describes a very serious mental disorder, a subvariety of paranoid schizophrenia that results if fearful delusions and violent impulses toward real or imagined homosexuals. It's a very rare condition, and most of it's sufferers are dangers to themselves and others.
But the term has expanded to mean something far more casual and generalized, and as such, in that usage, it is colloquial - not technically accurate. But that happens with language - especially a vital, living language like English.

But no - amateur semantic deconstruction of words with widely accepted meanings doesn't change those meanings.

Wow, what a load of bullshiat.  Lighten up, Francis.

Amen.  What a farking tool.

This is because they teach their kids to be homophobic shiatbirds. It's a self-perpetuating hate machine.

You're a Libertarian?

I consider myself a moderate libertarian and am not homophobic. It's that whole personal freedom thing, live your life how you like, as long as it doesn't negatively impact mine, I'm not going to have a problem with it.

This, a hundred times over. If you are an adult you should be able to do any damn thing you want as long as you aren't harming anyone else. Races, sexual preferences, religion, who cares? Humans are humans and should have the freedom to do whatever they want, again, as long as you aren't harming another person.

Why have any regulations at all, then?  If you harm someone, then you should go to jail for that... CEO, dude driving drunk, etc.

Let's just have no laws except for physical harm against someone else. Wouldn't that be great?

No, I don't think it would. I'm referring to personal liberty, not complete lack of rules and regulations. When you are in your own home doing your own thing not negatively impacting anyone else, why would anyone have a problem with that?
