What's with the recent 'tardism of "medals on a per capita basis"? Like we get to have Olympic contestants on the basis of country size. Or like a nation of one person who got two silvers is better than a nation with three competitors who swept the medal stand in their one event.

Or like athletes even live in the country they represent. Or like, as has been said, a nation gets one medal for two week's worth of hockey work, and that's less significant than the speed skaters that can all get multiple medals each week.

Or like the Winter Olympics aren't a set of B.S. games created to keep the poor countries that have good athletes but not proper weather out, so being a Euro country that chooses the sports doesn't help the ol' medal count.

Solid State Vittles: "You kill each other in American football. It's so rough, and because you like it and you've got all the money into that sport, there's not a lot of money in the other sports," he said. "Just nobody in the world wants to compete in that sport with you."

The truth hurts.  He could just as well be talking about the overall lack of success of US soccer too.

To be fair, the money for athletes in the U.S. is actually significantly bigger in baseball, basketball, and even hockey than it is in football, and those are all sports that have more international appeal and fewer consequences from roughness; again, even hockey. He still has a point, especially if the U.S. is going to make a mainstream media spectacle of its skaters' failures.

mikaloyd: The Chinese will probably kick our ass at ping pong too next olympics. If thats the penalty we pay to have football Im willing to pay it.

This.  Seriously, I don't give a flying fark about 90% of the Olympic competitions.  And if not being dominant in these sports is the price we pay for getting to watch the highest levels of Baseball and Football in our own backyard, I'd imagine most Americans are cool with it.
