Meh. Cello abuse is no laughing matter.

Was pretty good. I could've done without the guys eyefarking each other the whole way through though.

Destroying your bow like that every time you play this piece would get very expensive.  Horsehair ain't cheap.

Apocalyptica does it better.

2014-02-21 06:13:49 PM
That was awesome.

CSB - years ago (1995/96?) I saw a band by the name of Poe at a festival. During their intermission their bass player broke out a Cello and played Back in Black by AC/DC. I was seriously impressed by it as it was the first time I had heard "modern" music reinterpreted to a classic instrument like that.

They make enough that it's nothing but a tax write-off

Two guys rocking the hell out of their someone else's cellos. Enjoy this

Noone who owns one would do that to it.

Fine, since a few of you have apparently never seen it:

Meet Apocalyptica performing 'Path'

Meet Apocalyptica performing 'One'

Meet Apocalyptica performing 'Somewhere Around Nothing'

Harmageddon

They've been around for a long time...the 2 cellos are trying to steal their schtick, considering that Apocalyptica started out with 'Plays Metallica by Four Cellos'

That was fun. Reminded me of the Dixie Dregs a bit.

These guys make their living doing that.  Watch their other videos before you passing judgement lest the only thing that you'll pass correctly is a turd

I own one, and I'd probably do most of that. Maybe not the flailing around on the ground bit. You just need a throwaway bow for the hard bowing. You aren't going to break the instrument with most of that.

I didn't get the impression every sound came from those instruments.

It did seem like part of the main reprise was put on a delay for part of the song so they could do the other parts.

Also, put me don as one who enjoyed the video as well.

My stepdaughter can make her cello sing like that.  If she can do it while still in high school, professionals can do it with ease.

I've been following these guys for a while, they're farking amazing. If you get a chance check out some of their other videos like their Smooth Criminal cover. And if you're into modern music covers check out Rhett Price. He's a violinist that does some amazing covers

Saw Apocalyptica with Dir En Grey a few years back. Awesome show.

That was awesome right up until the point I noticed there were chello sounds from two chellos when one of them was too busy spanking it.  They were chello-synching it.  Now, if they could perform this piece in public, and actually play it, I'd pay money to see it.  Because if they're capable of cashing the check they wrote with this video, I'm willing to take it.  Hell, I'll even wear a frilly lace neck thing.

Agreed - and around 3:05 it becomes pretty clear that there's actually more than two instruments playing.  Still think it's an amazing piece of music, but there's more going on here than just two cellos.

Maybe with a looper pedal.

So is it a Highlander kind of thing, where there can be only one act doing cello covers?

/speaking of Highlander, modern bagpipe stuff is pretty great too

Infinitely better and a hell of a lot less awkward than those three chicks trying to look sexy while playing harps in an underground car park

Yeah, that particular arrangement needs at least three instruments.

But they apparently rock out the AC/DC all the time live.

That was delicious.  Gave me Tull flashbacks.  With Patillo's fluty funkitude, wonder if this cello funkmeister might make even more magic with him than the 2Cellos:

Trevor Exter's cello cover of "Use Me" by Bill Withers

As a cellist, getting a kick...

Definitely using a looper, which takes skill to use properly and effectively.

The bow abuse makes me cringe every time.

I like their stuff as a novelty, but the guys from Apocalyptica are more precise and emotive.  If it was guitar, it's like the difference between a great blues player and a great metal shredder. Both are impressive in their own right, but there's more "wiggle room" under heavy distortion.

Personal pet peeve: If you're playing an entire piece above 4th position... just play a damn viola already....

Precise and emotive:  http://youtu.be/5d6dFFhF608

These guys go through a lot of bows. Some bows aren't worth paying the labor for re-hairing. You can get a Glasser cello bow with horsehair for $40. They're not weighted well, and not a professional's bow, but they're more than usable for the kind of abuse these guys put them through.

I'm more concerned about those wooden instruments. The guy on the right is slamming the hell out of that C-string. I was watching this waiting for the neck to snap. They have much stronger unibody carbon-fibre cellos from Luis & Clark that they use for other performances, but would be anachronistic for the video.
