I will give the good Senator this: at least he didn't mince words about pulling the funding for this item; it was strictly homophobic.  He didn't try to dress it up as "we shouldn't be spending taxpayer dollars to GIVE them some book that they may or may not read."

Nope he said it plainly: "I understand diversity and academic freedom," Smith said, according to an AP report. "This is purely promotion of a lifestyle with no academic debate." He then added, "It graphically shows lesbian acts."

So he's using the legislature to enforce a lifestyle choice, i.e. evangelical, fear-based Christianity out of concern that college freshmen might get the idea that gay people aren't monsters teleported from another planet.

I tell you that they are almost guaranteeing that their children and their children's children will reject the Christian faith.  They first deny evolution and attempt to just suppress the science, when the theological principle communicated in Genesis has no relation at all to the scientific principle of evolution.  They attempt to get science from something that was never (even when it was written) supposed to be a description of the processes of the natural world.  However, you need to understand your belief and know it's history and what earlier church figures wrote on the subject.  You have to have a learned understanding of the foundations of your beliefs.  No.. they keep their children stunted with a childish, simplistic understanding of their beliefs and when confronted by the truth of the science behind evolution then their childish beliefs fall like twigs in a hurricane.  They abandon their belief because they never really understood it to begin with....

Same here...  They attempt to suppress these books as dangerous.  Their children will see it for the lie it is one day and again... throw off their beliefs.

The only way to maintain such a childish, simplistic belief system is through fear, intimidation, and willful ignorance.  Which as history shows is doomed to failure.

They think it is atheist, or   gays that is the danger to Christianity.  Sadly, it is their pathetic caricature of Christianity that is the real danger to the faith.

While the legislative act is profoundly stupid. I don't think a reduction in funding counts as a legal punishment.

I just flat out cannot trust anyone that has a problem young nubile college co-eds being exposed to graphic lesbian acts. Why it might even lead to those co-eds getting a little drunk at the next party then kissing each other. If you have a problem with something awesome like that happening you freak me the fark out. Like stay away from me psycho! Period! I know gay dudes that still love that show.

I'll be in my bunk

Do you that the legislature is imposing a legal fine on the university, as if it had been issued a traffic citation? Otherwise I don't see where you're going.

The wording in South Carolina law is:
1) SC Constitution Section 4: means Legislative Branch may NOT punish, cut funding or defund any person, group or institution that has not been found "Guilty" of a crime by the Judicial Branch.
2) SC Constitution Separation of Powers: means the Legislative Branch may NOT assign "guilt" nor assign "punishment" to any person, group or institution as ONLY the Judicial Branch has the power to assign "guilt" and assign "punishment.

Perhaps relevant.

You accidentally the whole sentence, there, but, unless I'm misrememebering, the Supreme Court decision striking down the Medicare expansion wasn't that the government was going to fine the states that didn't comply, but that they would cease funding them at previously agreed upon levels if they didn't agree to the new terms. This revision of the funding levels was seen by the court as an unacceptable threat of pulling funding which was unconstitutional. So pulling funding is functionally the same as punishment.

And nothing inspires academic debate like telling academics what they can and can't talk about.

Conservatives think about teh ghey 24/7/365. It's their "number one issue" facing humanity, more than poverty, disease, suffering and hunger.

I agree, we should only have literature about really manly men, men not afraid to show their manliness in front of women.

Like you know, the guy from A Streetcar Named Desire.

So when you think one view is being tought, but don't think it should be tought without academic debate, the solution is clearly to ensure that only you're viewpoint should be tought.

I'm now coining the word "hypocresponse" for this kind of situation.  Whenever the GOP decides that the best way to respond to a situation is to do the most hypocritical and asinine thing possible, it shall be a hypocresponse.

I see that someone has said this, rather exactly, as a comment on the story elsewhere. However, in the actual South Carolina Constitution (pdf) , I don't find anything like this.

They are literally destroying Christianity as a force for positive change, and they're doing it for entirely secular reasons.

It's a shame, really.

It all really boils down to the next generation.  The gay and lesbian life style is so attractive that most heterosexuals will switch if they become aware of this.  And where will babies come from if everyone is gay married?

This is the only argument that justifies this behavior, if people hear about being gay they will want to be gay.  If adult college students read one book about being gay thats it they will switch teams

I don't see a problem with that. We build that border fence and guards they always wanted and keep them out.  If they ask for aid, we'll throw more Ayn Rand books and tell them about their boot straps.

Son of a b*tch!  Have I been bamboozled by my fellow net dwellers... in my own town?  No, wait, I suppose their wording is proper as long as their interpretation is valid.  My reading failed me, thinking that was a quote not a paraphrase.

I would have to get into judicial research to validate or invalidate the interpretation.  Guess what I'll not be doing.
