Marvel has done extremely well with difficult material and earned the benefit of the doubt.

/Will be seeing GotG

It's never even been a successful comic book, but if Marvel can pull this off, it will show just how stupid DC has been for relying on only Superman and Batman when they have way better characters.

Go to YouTube and see how many people have swarmed the "Hooked on a Feeling" page.

2014-02-21 10:21:31 AM
As a casual fan of the Marvel Movies (I think the Avengers was just ok, I think IM1 is still their best), I loved this freaking trailer. Anyone who thinks this is a bad idea is crazy.

And whoever came up with the idea of transitioning Hooked on a Feeling to a raging percussive escalation is a genius.

YouTube Hispters:  I can't stand all of these people who are just here because of Guardians of the Galaxy!  I was a fan of Hooked on a Feeling long before any of you had ever heard of it!
Marvel Fans:  Let me guess, you first heard it on Ally McBeal?
YouTube Hipsters: ... SHUT UP

2014-02-21 10:27:36 AM
...and I regret nothing. In fact, I'm going to go watch it again.

Have you frozen playback on each of their rap sheets yet?

And seriously, there's more story and more character in that six seconds of them standing on the lineup than in the entirety of Green Lantern.

I think it's gonna bomb. If I'm wrong, OK. But mainstream America has not heard of these characters. A superhero raccoon? Can you say "Howard the Duck"? And more people had heard of him. A superhero tree? I know all you fan boys are excited, but fan boys alone don't bring big box office. Middle America has to know and love the characters. Even then it's not a guarantee. Middle America knew who Catwoman was. How did that movie do? Daredevil? Elektra?

This movie seems like another "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" to me.

That was way better than it should have been. Also I swear every trailer uses a Nine inch Nails song for at least a part of it. Trent must be making a fortune from that.

That movie didn't bomb. Had a $78M budget and made $180M at the box office. FWIW.

I think it looks promising. I'm far more skeptical about how they're going to make Ant-Man sound appealing moving into phase three.

If it's fun and well written and has good performances, people will go see it. The source material is basically meaningless for the vast majority of the audience.

Ohh and that's not to say WWZ was fun, well-written, or had good performances.

Just that general audiences don't give a shiat about source material.

It should be noted that the opening day midnight showing of any movie based on source material with a significant nerd following (any comic movie, Lord of the Rings, etc.) is not an accurate representation of the general public's feelings (or lack thereof) about the source material.

One of the guys on the Comic Dorks podcast described it as "Fifth Element meets Big Trouble in Little China", which I thought was the best comp I've heard so far. I mean, come on, you want to watch Fifth Element meets Big Trouble in Little China, right? Of course you do. Because you have a soul.

Marvel is setting the tone for this perfectly. People obsessing over the raccoon and the tree are missing the point: Groot and Rocket are going to be comic relief that are probably on screen like 10% of the movie. This movie is about letting Pratt do his likable-goofy shtick for ~120 minutes, a bunch of cool effects, and a nice setup for an after-credits scene that will move the Thanos arc along a little bit.

What would be problematic, and which background? Like most characters who have been around since the early days of comic books she's already been rebooted and retconned up the wazoo.

They could pick any origin story or just create a new one whole cloth.

I told my wife that Vin was in the movie, she watched the trailer and got mad at me because he wasn't 'there'. I explained that he voiced Groot, she still wasn't happy. We'll go see the movie though because it looks fking awesome.

Okay, now stay with me...

An alien is sent to Earth, separated from all he knows, gifted with powers far beyond those of mere men and women, rises to the challenge and becomes a hero and a symbol of hope.

A woman is sent into modern society, separated from all she knows, gifted with powers far beyond those of mere men and women, rises to the challenge and becomes a heroine and symbol of strength and honor.

Rocket Racoon is the the spiritual heart of the film (according to Gunn).  He and Groot are both fleshed out characters that are treated as peers.

Side note: Groot is not a mindless beast (the hulk).  The reason he only says 'I am Groot', is that for his species the vocal chords go 'weird and locked' in adulthood.  But there is still nuance.  All the other characters can understand him just like people could understand R2-D2.

That, most likely.  Iron Man was far from my favorite comic book character but his movie blew the others away thanks to (a) RDJ and less importantly in this case, (b) the writing and direction.

The trailer sees director James Gunn wisely opting to confront our lack of familiarity with the Guardians head on.

I haven't seen the trailer yet but all I'm getting so far is that the movie was made by serial killer Buffalo Bill.  Which is a brave choice I guess.

Balony. The Justice League cartoon did it in like 5 minutes. There's a threat to the Earth, Diana wants to leave Themyscira to help, Hippolyte says no, and Diana steals her outfit/lasso/sword and goes anyway. She shows up in DC, kicks some ass, meets Steve Trevor, and she works with him/the government to take down The Threat. Along the way Diana gets to sass a lot of chauvinistic generals and just generally do amazing things.
