Reciprocity, how does that work?

What's sort of funny, is the folks who are screaming that states HAVE to allow folks to be able to seek insurance across state lines, and stamp and pout about "state's rights!" are also the same folks who are saying, "That meanie over there is making it legal, and I don't wanna!"

The problem is, that many of the "reasons" to defend these bans, would likewise then tell their citizens that divorce, adoption, and single parenting due to loss of a spouse from illness or divorce, or just plain getting left are thus unfit. And that marriage is only for procreation, which is an oddball argument at best.

It boils down to it: there are no real legal reasons to defend these stinkers, because they all boil down to "Because the Bible." And oddly enough, while a lot of folks dislike the idea, we're NOT a Christian nation, but a collection of folks with religious freedom, and that sort of points to folks being more than free to dictate what happens in their own churches, and likewise means, that they have no say in what other faiths do in their own. Don't want to marry a dude? Don't want to marry a lady? Then don't. But maybe keep in mind, that your choices aren't other folk's. What is sort of hilarious, is that folks who would otherwise say, "the culture of handing out trophies and making people feel 'special' is out of control!" are looking to make churches who want to be the arbiters of what other churches do, and those without faith entirely, be extra special, and pat them on the head, and give them a cookie.

The time is long past that we put this mess to pasture. It's none of your damn business, and it's time to get the government and neighbors' noses out of our bedrooms and out of our churches. You want to forbid such ceremonies in your own churches? Fantastic. Go on with that. But stop demanding that other folks hold to your beliefs, and stop trying to mandate, and get the government to back you. You want to win the culture war? Then do it the old fashioned way: bring folks to you by being the example. Show them your way is best, in the right way. Bring up healthy families. Be beacons of morality. Be better, and live better, and maybe folks will come to your thinking. But stop demanding that your hand be held while you do it, and stop having hissy fits when people like what you don't...

The "weeds" of multiculturalism are spreading, and they are spreading because their rotten fruit has not yet fully sprouted. When it does sprout, the people will see what has actually been sown, but by then clearing the mess will be much more difficult, and their growth will have choked off the desired produce that will then be in short supply.

That is why persons such as myself, who recognize what is happening, must be ever vigilant, and we must push back as hard as we can with our cultural weed killer. We are fighting to make sure that those weeds do not take root and that when the time comes, the only plants in the field will be the ones that we want there: potato.

"Michigan supports natural procreation and recognizes that children benefit from being raised by parents of each sex who can then serve as role models of the sexes both individually and together in matrimony"

Which is why it is illegal in Michigan to get a divorce if you have children.  Also, if your spouse dies then you are required to remarry someone of the opposite sex within 15 months because small government and Bible.

Just a few years ago I would have said it's gonna take 15-20 years before we have nation-wide gay marriage.  Now it looks more like 5 years.  Thank you, GOP, for being such insane assholes and passing such obviously unconstitutional laws and amendments that now everybody's attention is now drawn to the subject of gay marriage.  You're the squeaky wheel and you're about to get lubed up, dipshiats.

But he says even a Supreme Court ruling won't settle the matter. "The court is not going to decide the issue of same-sex marriage for anybody. The issue will ultimately belong to the people."

"The people," have  already decided.  We're just straightening out the paperwork at this point.  You lost, and it wasn't even kind of an even competition.  Move on.

They don't care.  They either fully and totally believe that they are right, or they are afraid that being proved wrong on this one thing will prove their whole system wrong.  Either way, they think they are fighting for God, so they'll never think they're wrong, and persecution is a big enough part of their doctrine that they're enjoying the fight.

I used to live in GA, and I went to a private Christian school (because it was a top-notch school, and the GA public school system is terrible), and I tried talking with my religious peers about this issue.  I tried pointing out that other religions didn't necessarily have a problem with it, that we were talking about something that is really a civil matter, that it had no actual impact on them in any way at all, that government shouldn't follow the dictates of one particular religious interpretation (because what if it changes to a different interpretation from yours?)--nothing I said mattered, they thought it was wrong because they think God thinks it's wrong, and that's that.  I would break it down to the level of "we are talking about a civil contract offered by the state that has zero impact on you," and the answer would be, "well, I still just feel that it's wrong."  And if you try pointing out other sinful behavior that the government doesn't currently legislate, they'll either deflect or you'll find out just how much they wish they could control other people's lives.  It also didn't matter how much I could quote scripture to prove them wrong--their feelings were all that mattered.

For these kind of people, their faith is more important than anything else (their weird, twisted, faith).  It supersedes their nationality, their self-interest, their empathy, and in a startling number of cases, their very humanity.

That's why we'll have to force everything we need to be equal through the courts, and I won't be surprised if the federal marshals will have to get involved.  All these "religious freedom" gay crow laws are just the beginning of the freakout.

We owe special thanks to Karl Rove for pushing the issue so hard in 2004.  We need to erect a fabulous rainbow statue of him in the Castro.  Celebrate him every pride parade as the best at boosting gay rights as a national issue.

I also attended a Christian school when I was a kid (mid-late 70s). They weren't nearly as bigoted back then as they are now apparently... 'Course this was in Massachusetts, not Georgia. Though, we've got plenty of bigots up here too. Back then, the general pop was overwhelming against gay marriage, so I don't think it was on their radar as anything more than a perversion to be condemned.

'Course, many of them will have to make it to the 20th Century first. : )

By contrast, Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette, is defending his state's ban, which goes on trial in federal court in Detroit beginning Feb. 25.

"Michigan supports natural procreation and recognizes that children benefit from being raised by parents of each sex who can then serve as role models of the sexes both individually and together in matrimony," says a brief filed by the state.

Is that a real thing?

In that case, they will want to outlaw fertility clinics and marriages between any people who can't or won't have kids such as the elderly and infertile, right?

I recall a significant increase in homophobia during the early- to mid-1970s as the Boobies-Stonewall generation reached maturity. Those who became adults in the 1960s were accustomed to a happy caricature of homosexuality typified by the likes of Liberace, Charles Nelson Reilly, and Rip Taylor, but then Americans were confronted by gays and lesbians who actually demanded the right to live with equality and dignity, and that was threatening to a good many people. That's my hypothesis, anyway.

Interesting.  I was born in the early 70s so wouldn't have seen this first hand.  Both my parents were born in the 50s and I was curious what may have shaped their generation.  My mom couldn't care less about marriage equality while my father worries about the dreaded gay agenda.

More likely, it's a sampling jellybean -- particularly since if you look in the 2010 data, there's a slight spike for the 1950-1959 cohort instead of a slight dip.
