It's snow. It's slippery. It already does 90% of the work. This is what happens when you let the engineers write the design docs.

Came to snark, but thought I might look at the article first. Cool beans!

No. The only thing a Real Man needs for the winter is long johns.

I read the headline and was like "yeah whatever" but I watched the video and that thing is freakin awesome.

"can haul a person or cargo for 130 miles on an eight-hour charge."

I call shenanigans. No way a battery powered electric anything is going 130 miles through snow on 1 charge, unless it starts at the top of Everest.

looks like a retarded snowmachine.

Oh look! Someone invented the snowmobile!

2014-02-21 10:37:48 AM
I WANT ONE! That would be awesome for pulling my shack across the ice. Small enough to fit in the back of the pickup, light enough for a couple of guys to lift. This is definitely going on my Christmas list!

It's a rejiggered (technical engineering term) snowmobile. He just moved the parts around and provided a different power plant probably.

That looks like a fun toy. I'm getting so depressed with the amount of snow this winter, that could cheer me up. Who wouldn't want to have a chainsawsled instead of a dogsled?

That would be me. At least this thing doesn't make noise or pollute the air, unlike those godawful snowmobiles.

Sure it's essentially an electric snowmobile that you don't ride on top of. But hell, you can do things with that configuration that you can't do with a snowmobile.

Right and I'm no snow machine expert but the most interesting thing about it is how is separated the track and engine from the sled so he can hook it up to different things and also use it as a general purpose ATV the rest of the year.  Cool design.  If I had some land I'd definitely want one.

That looks like a good way to end up with a set of tank treads in your lap.

2014-02-21 10:50:45 AM
All it's missing from being a tank is the tank part of a tank.  It's got the tread, just no tank.  Therefore, it's a tank.

Would those tracks + that power chew up the dirt on a snowless track? Might make a hell of a rototiller, but couldn't it lead to massive erosion of your ATV trails?

Dunno, in part of the video he's running it in the fall on leaves and doesn't seem to be digging it.

Yep, basically an inefficient, poorly designed snowmobile.  Looks like the kind of thing that would be fun to build yourself, but not so much to buy.

2014-02-21 11:18:13 AM
Oh, and it will be all fun and games until it flips back onto you and eats your face.

When the ambulance service that I work for part-time decided to close one of it's divisions, they closed the mass casualy unit. My boss was put in charge of disposing of the equipment, and ended up with about 200 body bags. I took seveal home and use them for various projects. Last week when it snowed, my kids found out that they make great sleds. water proof, slick and with built in handles. The kids had a ball..... and freaked the neighbor kids out when they told them what they were riding in!

No, it's not a snowmobile.

Snowmobiles have runners for steering, and the treads are in the back. And you sit on top of the treads.

This one is electric and not one of those noisy polluting motherfarkers.

2014-02-21 11:24:42 AM
But does it work on grass? Or modified for summer use?

See, there's your problem.  You've actually seen and used a snowmobile before.

Trust these guys, they are experts.

This. It made me think of the snow scooter plans that used to be for sale in the back of Popular Mechanics. Man, did I want to build one of those when I was a kid. Sadly, my dad wouldn't finance the project.

Ker_Thwap: Oh, and it will be all fun and games until it flips back onto you and eats your face.

He was on a morning show here in Quebec(in French, of course, so I didn't catch everything he said) and it seems as part of the invention he conserves the heat produced from friction(?) to heat the battery, giving more power and a longer range.
So, not just a rehashed snowmobile.

I a sled that I can attach directly to my feet so I can sled down the hill while standing up. Then I could do jumps and stuff. I'll bet if they got popular enough it could even become an Olympic sport.

also at the end of the vid, they show it some sort of snowmobile configuration with skis out front.

As long as it's electric, and the pollution is generated in someone elses back yard.  Safety standards are for suckers, no one likes a nanny state.

I can see a practical use for this machine.  To carry old people out into the wilderness to die of exposure.

I sort of have a reputation for having the col stuff... When my kids were younger, I used to teach them and their friends how to rappel off my back deck (about 15 feet). My son's snow gear is turnout gear... I bet they expected something like this.

I did find my son laying on the couch later that day with a toe tag tide to his right great toe. It came in one of the bags with "Attach to toe" written on it in large block letters. He had no idea what a Toe Tag was.
