Technically the air is at least 99.44% pure, because they are only warning about particulate pollution.

When the air gets really bad, Beijing says it has an emergency plan to yank half the city's cars off the road. The only problem is: It may be difficult to ever set that plan in motion.

In Shanghai they order half the cars off the road every weekday, and traffic still sucks.  License plates are only good on alternate days. If you want to drive every day you have to buy two, and they are expensive by American standards.

I was in Beijing in the 90's and the air sucked then! At the time I couldn't fathom it getting worse.  Well...

So the smog is like, what... Los Angeles, 1975? This is nothing a few automobile Clean Air regulations can't fix.

We westerners are gleeful over imagined problems. Beijing air is bad -- no argument there -- but we're so shamelessly *happy* about it we fall for stupid things like "BEIJING SMOG IS SO BAD THEY SHOW SUNRISE ON A MONITOR". That was untrue. Yes, the photo is real. No, it's not a sun replacement, it was one shot of a continuously changing video ad wall.

Many #sochiproblems aren't even things to anyone that has been outside the country.

Just got back from Beijing, that was the only time we saw the sun was in the square on that screen!!

Shanghai was not nearly as bad.

Obviously wrong. It's bikes that cause all the pollution.
